Hi Danilux

you might try out the following URL’s for the solution of this problem.Seems to be a Miscrosoft Installer Issue.

What other Adobe programs are/ were on the system? With what user privileges do you install? The message would indicate that in fact the files were installed, but the licensing system could not be established…

I had the same error messages as Danilux. I have vista ultimate 64 with Photoshop CS and CS3 upgrade installed. I deleted CS3 and used the CS3 removal software to remove the remaining CS3 in the registry. I went to install CS4 Extended and about 90% finished it stopped loading with the same errors. Rebooted computer and tried again and it gave me a error message of stop loading. It also told me I could not run 2 installs of the software at the same time. Called tech support and spent about 6 hours on the phone with 4 different people. We tried everything and they were at a loss. So after I hung up I looked at my registry and searched Adobe and CS3 and still found left over stuff. Some I could not remove. So I said screw it and re-formatted my hard drive and reinstalled Vista. Did all the vista updates, card drivers and such then I installed CS. Rebooted and defraged. Re-installed CS4 with no problems. Then re-installed my other software. Been running perfect since. My guess is that I borked my system myself trying to fully remove CS3.

A lot of people don’t like to re-format and start fresh. But from past problems I find it a lot easier and faster to start from scratch.

@Eternal_Sunshine:
Yes the first thing i did was that but i didn’t work, i went to the microsoft website and i did all 3 fixes and nothing worked.

@Mylenium:
I had CS3 Previosly installed and now i can’t even install CS3 again, I’m admin.

@David E Crawford:
Wow. we are in the same case only that i’m on 32bits, i had CS3 installed and uninstall it but i get this error message, i don’t have a problem formating and since that seems to be the last option i’m gonna go for it, Thanks David.

I can’t seem to get past the following error when installing photoshop cs4 upgrade on xp.

Adobe CMaps CS4
Error:
Error 1603. Error 1714.The older version of Adobe CMaps CS4 cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group

I’ve disabled McAfee, uninstalled Google Desktop, and cleaned my registry. I do have cs2, cs3, LR1, and LR2 installed. I also looked in the knowledge base and faq, but haven’t found a solution.

I the installation log files I see a number of messages like the following related to CMaps

10:43:1:468 -(Adobe)- -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- BEGIN – Adobe_9f8d2b5c97c6c0aef753b74334b03987_WP_Symbol -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-

Any advice would be appreciated.

@David: sounds like another tool never finished installing. Some programs that require a restart after install will finish their installs using a registry key, but obviously this sometimes fails. could be something as trivial as an Updater for a virus scanner or something. Anyway, since you have nuked your system and could resolve the issue, no need to add more fluff to the discussion from my end… 😉

@John: Manually removing registry entries is not advised. It will definitely render your licensing system defunct and in addition may lock up files, which is probably what you are experiencing. You should uninstall your broken install of CS4 via "Add or Remove Programs" again. This should reset all config data and only leave "released" files in place. On a whim, you could try to unregister your installer packages using the CS4 clean utility, then manually remove the CMaps directory. This also applies to the CS3 install, as CMaps is a shared component found in Program Files/Common Files/Adobe. Attempting another install after that should get you up and running.

@Danilux: Could you provide the last few lines from the install log like John did? this might help. I’m still not feeling this magic tingling in my left toe and have no idea what could cause your error.

Hi Mylenium,

Thanks for your suggestions. I ended up uninstalling CS2 and old versions of 1.x LR. I also ran the repair option using the CS3 installation cd.

After that I was able to install CS4.

Thanks,

Hi Mylenium,
Thanks for the info. I did shut everything off like defender, fire wall and such before the install. However, I did not check Task Manager to ensure they were not running behind the scenes. But life is good once again and CS4 runs perfect. Thanks for responding.

Going on day 8 since I nuked my hard drive and CS4 is still running great. Can’t blame those poor tech support people. They are just reading off of cards. My problem was not on their cards. 6 hours with them on the phone was enough for me.
Mylenium was correct about the registry restart. I shut my computer down 2 times to try and stop the install box from coming up. However, the box still kept telling me I was trying to install the software while another install was in progress.
I deleted the registry keys in HKEY Current. However, there were several other duplicate entries in LOCAL, USERS and CURRENT that refused to be deleted. This was even with me logged in REGEDIT as ADMIN.
System restore was useless too. The regestry entry were still there. CS3 had a regestry cleaner to clean up. CS4 didn’t.
I didn’t have the time to mess around so I reformatted.
Everything is still good for me.

I do not intend to uninstall CS3 as this is a trial, so if I remove the cmaps directory, this will impact Cs3 ops?

This is the most outrageous installation package I have ever worked with! I can install a National Instruments VI program which is far larger than PS with absolutely no problems and no problems running it. This NI program will allow me to instrument highly sophisticated instrumentation packages, configure everything with aplomb. What do I get here? First, Downloading problems. I finally get past that and along comes error 1603, 1714. Checking here, I find that I actually have to uninstall a partially installed package, which is now date stamped and time stamped, so that whatever time I now take to fix installation will most likely cost me at the other end. And the other end is not in sight!

Then I have to look forward to possible operational problems as I progress, if I can progress.

I started at 9 AM. It is now 2 PM. 60% of a working day blown with trying to install this stuff.

I’m not at all convinced that I will ever need anything beyond CS3 at this point. With all it’s warts, it install and runs.

Oh, and by the way, the CS4 cleanup script link doesn’t work.

I do this sort of work for a living (validating software)and if this would be the best results I could expect from my efforts, I would run like hell away from my job.

if your cs3 is working larry, and you NEED it to do work (and i know YOU do, unlike me), i’d let the trial alone until adobe works some of these "gotchas" out of the system. personally, i’m not upgrading until something definite comes out of adobe and i start seeing reversals of some of these horror stories…

i’ve been tempted to do the trial, sorely tempted, yes sir, but every day reading here sees more and more of this stuff.

You can’t miss out on something that doesn’t install, Bob. 64 bit will enhance the speed of certain filters, but checking out what I would really find useful should also be obvious at 32 bit.

I’ve copied it to a thumb drive and I may try it on an i7 system Vista 64 I have access to. Also, I have access to a Core 2 system albeit 32 bit. Dual boot so we can try a download the owner has done and mine, to see if there are d/l issues getting in the way.

Thanks Nick, dave, for the support. I deal with somewhat similar issues at work, but I have a coterie of software guys who actually come up with fixes. Well, most of the time! 😀

Oh, and another thing. Adobe Support Advisor? It popped up when I tried to check out the error. However, it would not install. Said I needed Flash 9 Active X . Guess what I have on this computer?

But wait! There’s more! In the pdf that comes with CS4, it also refers to this Support advisor, and the link works. The damn thing installed!

Nov 29, 2008
But…if you have any intention at all of upgrading then why wait? Will you have problems? Maybe, but there’s no assurance of it and what if Adobe issues a dot release in the next couple of months and people are still having problems?

Will you still wait? Will you skip it completely and wait for CS5?

All I’m saying here is that you could well be missing out on a great release. You above all should know that this forum is always filled with issued. Many of them legit, some of them user error.

But downloading and checking out the demo isn’t going to hurt anything especially since I know you’re just itching to blow out the XP box and install Vista 64. <g>

You can’t miss out on something that doesn’t install, Bob.

That’s absolutely correct, but you won’t know unless you try. And it would be great if someone like Dave did.

It’s one thing to have people who don’t know a CPU from a video card screaming "Photoshop Sucks!" and another to have well informed people that can calmly help in the troubleshooting.

And it would be great if someone like Dave did.

🙂 things being what they are, i’m sticking with cs3 for a bit. i’m wondering if my system might be under-powered. xp32, core2duo e6600, 2 gig ram, nvidia 7600gtx. but i don’t really have any plans to go to vista 64 and according to chris, seems that’s where the better ps4 experience is. i’m still on the fence. i probably WILL do cs4 soon, but probably not vista. and i’m more concerned about this update than i’ve ever been before.

and another to have well informed people that can calmly help in the troubleshooting.

on the off chance that i do install it and don’t have problems, i don’t know how much help i could be except to be another voice in the wilderness going "works for me". or if it does fail, what would be the point of subjecting myself to the screaming mee-mees if a patch is going to be what it takes to fix it?

most likely once the christmas shopping for the kids is done and paid for, i’ll take a chance. (there’s also the "locked into extended edition" issue for me to think about. wasn’t that supposed to be corrected according to nack? i wonder if anyone talks to anyone internally anymore sometimes… very sad.)

Weill, I’m not getting any "calm help" here, and I do this kind of work in my job.

I did an extensive search for Errors 1603 and 1714 and found little to be of any help.

So, I’m back to this:

CMAPS exists for CS3 which can be deleted. If this is the culprit and I delete it, what happens to the functionality of CS3? If this isn’t the correct cmaps where is the elusive "older version"?

issue 1. what’s with the stupid downloader you apparently HAVE to use to get the trial?

I already have a downloader. it’s called a web browser (foxy!). you should NOT be forced into downloading and running an exe off the internet in order to download another file when every computer on the internet already has that capability inherent. sounds like someone didn’t want to waste their partnership deal with akamai, the download manager supply people.

the number 1 rule is "KISS"… we all know what that means right? the fewer moving parts the better. why would you put your product (adobe) at risk of a third party problem (akamai, in this case) unless you ABSOLUTELY have to? there should be an option right next to the download manager option to "download straight" from adobe’s ftp servers, or wherever you want to store it.

so now i have to download and run this 3rd party app. why? i dunno. but i bet it’s also going to want to connect to the inter-tubes and i’m going to have to let it though my firewall.

ok continuing the saga:

closed firefox. hit retry.

select "run as trial".

accept the "uncopyable" license agreement. hint: some people actually read these things. it’s kinda a nice gesture to the user to allow them to copy the license language so they can paste it into a program like word pad and change the font to something more readable the standard legal dept licensing’s 2pt Beelzebub Semi-Bold. …

now the choice… do i choose "easy install" or "custom"? there’s a freaking lot of components to install…

I select "custom" but leave all options checked. just in case this gives me more control over things like file associations after the install. oddly enough, i can select and deselect anything on the long list INCLUDING photoshop cs4, EXCEPT for bridge cs4 (ok a lot of the sub components are un-de-selectable too). go figure…

ok. go go gadget INSTALL!

wait! did it ask me what drive? i don’t think so…? it’s going anyway. most likely to my c: drive. grr… i wanted to (meant to) select G. user error? probably. maybe…

ok walk away for 10 minutes to save my blood pressure. come back and it’s hung at about 75% done because now "Adobe AIR" app installer want access to 199.7.48.190 on the internet. WTF?!! ok, again.

side note while install continues… i let the adobe installer (cs3) do it’s thing weekly, so i should have all the latest components for stuff that existed prior to cs4 release. i wonder if this is going to roll any of them back?

looks like it’s heading for the home stretch. the progress bars are at about 90% (there’s no actual percent reading, just bars going across the install window.)

ok. cool. cs4 install complete. looks like everything installed good.

I can install CS4 on three machines, except on my principal machine iCS4 installs with errors. So far as other problems, CS4 behaves like CS3 on my system, that is, tools are about as smooth as CS3. Nothing jerky.

The basic differences between the two machines running without errors and my principal machine is my machine is AMD the other two, Intel.

Another difference is the Intels are PCIe and mine is PCI video cards.

The older version of Adobe CMaps CS4 cannot be removed.

sounds like a permissions issue larry. can you run the installer again after starting in safe mode? might be something hooked somewhere…

David M: After the somewhat fraught atmosphere here in the last days, I really enjoyed your running commentary on the CS4 installation.

It was almost as if we were there with you as it proceeded. All we needed were some tea and biscuits and the experience would have been complete.

Anthony.

Installation will not proceed in Safe Mode. At any rate, it seems rather random the way certain errors creep in if it’s a permissions issue.

The error message seems too generic to be of much use. But that seems to be the way of many error messages!

ok larry,

here’s what i think… if you’re confident in the ability to reinstall cs3, assuming you need it on that machine, i’d remove that with the control panel, then get the cs3 clean script, run that a few times, at level 2 then at level 3, (did someone mention there was a "hidden" level 4 switch? double secret probation? :)) then go for a cs4 install.

I don’t know about the cs4 script but the cs3 script has been shown to work wonders on many systems.

don’t know if you’ve seen this:

Using the new CS3Clean Script
< http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb 402767&sliceId=2>

the reason i’m suggesting this is because the cs4 installer seems to be having a problem with updating some components that were installed first with cs3…

I’ve come to similar conclusions after doing a Google search of the various missing elements. They are in CS3 and 4, so I suspected them, but wasn’t sure, other than getting rid of CS3 entirely, how to handle it.

I found a reference to manual installation by adobe which listed conflicts with these files. It said Microsoft Mac and Firefox for most of the conflicts.

I don’t have any worries about re-installing CS3. I do see how easy it is to get hooked on CS4 however!

Note about dragging brushes, etc. At full screen, I see no drag, but at 100% there is stuttering, as well as with the menu for things like sharpening. Not annoying, especially as I have only a PCI video card.

Well, it appers that CS4 is actually running at nominal. A careful inspection of the error free Dell installation and the "crippled" one is that functions like Type and pdf, which at first glance seemed unuseable, actually are. I just didn’t know where to look for changes in the use of those functions.

So, what is the truth here? Did CS4 simply attach those tools and palettes from CS3 to CS4, calling it an error?

An update:

I compared folder size for CS4 on the Dell computer and mine. Exactly the same size, down to the last byte!

So, if 11 files didn’t load, how does the two systems achieve parity?

the files weren’t loaded the cs4 folder? they could be anywhere. windows system32, prog files\adobe\commone, docs&settings\user\appdata\adobe\etc etc etc.

The files as loaded in both CS4 folders.

I’ve seen the 1603 error suggestions. And about the 1714 error message as well. The Windows cleanup utility didn’t do anything. I tried a number of suggestions from the Google references and it still showed the same set of missing files.

The fact that I have parity between machines with the CS4 folder indicates the files are not missing, and I see no problems showing up with things like type tool at this point. Of course, this is far from conclusive other than the identical file and byte count.

I’ll take a look at the CS3 Cleanup probably this weekend.

I notice that these errors show up with Autodesk as well, but their tech people actually responded with a solution for their particular problem set.

Some companies take these problems seriously, others don’t.

I also encounter the same error 1603 while I was installing CS4. (CS2 completed removed)I tried couple of solutions but those don’t work. Error 1603 occurs due file(s) are locked or cannot be over-written, I solve this problem by closing all background applications (esp. norton 2k9), then run the installation once, problem solved!

I encountered the same error and figured out what was happening. There is a directory called CMap, somewhere I found it in Acrobat 9 which Adobe is trying to update. its script is running with something like administrator mode but the CMAP files are owned by system and Administrator is not given full control i.e. the power to rewrite the files. Hence there is a general protection error 1603 which is fixed by changing ownership of the files to something which the script belongs and giving it full control over the relevant files. Unfortunately, I found the problem while removing all adobe stuff from the computer and reinstalling. Once you know what this error is, you can fix it easily
