This question may have been asked before but I could not find in the forum. I have a few plugins installed in my CS3 now. Do I need to manually reinstall all of them when I upgrade to CS4?
Thanks

Hi,

I’m assuming you are asking about 3rd party plug-ins.

Most likely you will need to reinstall for each version; But it depends on how you installed it. You may also need to check with the 3rd party about license and activation.

You can opt to install into the Ps plug-in folder for any given version, or install to a location outside of Ps and then point to that directory in the Ps preferences (see Preferences> Plug-Ins> Additional Plug-Ins Folder).

If you went the former route then reinstall to CS4. If you went the later, check the preference option and point to the folder.

BTW, don’t just move the whole CS3 Plug-Ins directory over to CS4 because the set shipped with Ps get rebuilt and you will put copies from CS3 that are not compatible with CS4 into that directory.

In addition to what Steve has suggested, if you are looking for the Adobe plugins which were part of CS3 (Extract Filter, Picture Package / Contact Sheet, Pattern Maker, and a few others, you can find these in the Extra Content Folder that came with your Download or on your CD.

I’m using Windows Vista 64 and am planning to upgrade from Photoshop CS3 to CS4 for Vista 64. Will the plugins I used in CS3 work in APS CS4 Vista 64? My plugins are important to my workflow. Thanks.

32bit plug-ins won’t work in 64bit.

In addition to what John wrote, if you are using 3rd party plugins which have not developed a 64-bit version, send them an email asking when their 64-bit version will be released.

Add an extra line at the end something along the lines of:- "if you are not developing a 64-bit plugin at the moment, could you suggest an alternative plug-in which does the same as yours, but is 64-bit"

That might make them sit up and think a bit 🙂
