I don’t think you can have both CS3 and CS4 activated at the same time unless you have 2 full copies of each as opposed to upgrading fro CS3 to CS4. I

you definitely can.

Yepp, Dave is right. There should be no problem having them on the disc. Contrary to Jeff’s statement, activations are kept separate in case of updates. You may just at some point in the future be unable to activate your CS3 again, should you move to a different machine or need to reinstall CS3 otherwise for some reason, but obviously that’s an exotic scenario now that you have upgraded to CS4 already and even so, it would probably not occur before CS7, when Adobe cease all support of then "legacy" versions no longer entitled to upgrades (if the current scheme still applies then);-) And even in legal terms the License Agreement doesn’t force you to uninstall previous versions as far as I remember (yeah, we all never really read this stuff…), so you should be walking on safe ground.

right. it says you can keep the old version loaded and use it in accordance with it’s license agreement as long as it’s on the same system.

see section 5. "Updates"

I faced the same problem as well and soon realized whats going on. But I would have liked to have CS3 as well since CS4 lags on my system a lot! But the discussion here has me confused..can i or cant i have and use them both?

FWIW, when I installed CS4 on my Vista desktop, CS3 still ran perfectly well, but the activation/registration section was greyed out. This was also the case with the second install onto my Win XP laptop.

As it happens, I removed both instances of CS3 as I am okay and happy with CS4.

Whether some of the other posters are seeing this behaviour rather than a "cannot run CS3 at all with CS4 on-board" I don’t know…

Anthony.

OK, so apparently the problem only happens to folks using the Creative Suite? I don’t have the whole suite, just PS CS3 and PS CS4 installed, and I haven’t seen any activation problems with PS CS3.

Must be a license manager cock-up. I can run both versions of Design Standard here with no problems. Deactivate is still an active option under Help in CS3.

On another note, I’m not too happy with the new "silent" activation. I like to know what’s happening, and when.

Contrary to Jeff’s statement, activations are kept separate in case of updates.

I knew I should have left that one alone. They "are" in completely separate folders, so it makes some sense.

So…..I can leave CS3 on my laptop, fully functional and still use CS4 on my desktop.

I like it. Whenever I upgrade my O/S or hardware, I lose an application (non-Adobe) due to too many activations and then I have to buy it again or live without it. Every time I exceed the limit I send an email encouraging the company to "embrace the activation magic" and they always say, "Thanks".

There seems to be some confusion regarding activation and I could see myself somehow getting locked out of CS4 and having to face the dreaded phone call where I get scolded for not deactivating properly. Although there was a point where I had everything installed and activated on both my laptop and desktop at the same time. Truly unintentionally and I was surprised when I realized it.

The programs are also listed individually, so most likely any of them and all of them???

Strange…I just opened CS3 and was prompted to reactivate. The reactivation went through okay but this can’t be a good sign.

I have CS3 and CS4 and parts of CS2 loaded on my computer. After reading this thread,I ran PS CS3 Extended – no activation required (as in the situation Robert Levine found). However, the deactivate button was greyed out. Okay. So, next I loaded PS CS4 Extended (part of Master Collection) and the deactivate button for that is also greyed out! This concerns me for the future (not a problem at the moment) because I know I will need a new computer in the next few months to replace my existing dinosaur with its EIDE-based hard drives and motherboard. Has anyone else noticed this?

I hate to think I will need to call Adobe to get all my programs deactivated over the phone if and when my computer actually crashes. Even with a warning of impending hard drive failure, I apparently will not be able to deactivate all my Adobe apps before it happens.
