Error 1603 is a generic machine-specific issue. One or more of the following fixes may resolve the error.
1. This error is known to occur on computers that do not have enough disk space for the installation. Increase your hard disk space.
2. The temp directory is full
3. A certain file on the machine is locked. To fix this:
1. Close all applications running in the background.
2. Reboot your computer.
3. Run the installation again.
4. The Windows Installer Service may not be properly installed on the machine. Update the system with the latest Windows Installer Service.
5. On Windows NT, 2000, or XP, make sure you have administrative privileges.
6. Use MicrosoftΒs Windows Installer Cleanup utility to remove traces of previous installations. This utility does not remove files installed by the installation, which may need to be removed manually.
Thank you for your quick reply. π
1. I’ve definately got enough disk space.
2. I’ve cleared out my temp directory. This would be %temp% in windows vista, I cleared it out manually.
3. I’ve also closed all applications and rebooted and tried to install several times.
4. Windows Vista is completely up to date.
5. I’m using windows vista, so this doesn’t apply.
6. I’ve done this, but I’m not sure what all I should remove. I didn’t see anything left over from Photoshop CS4 or anything CS4 for that matter after I removed.
6. It cleans out the registry values, it does not remove the files, you should find them in the ‘Program Files (x86)/Adobe’. There will also be other files under your user name, you can also delete those as well. Remember to re-boot your machine again after doing this.
If you are still having problems, it could be something left over in the registry, you can use the Adobe Clean Script. I would run that after doing above, rebooting then trying a re-install.
I had done that before, but this time I uninstalled everything adobe, removed a CRAPLOAD of files and then reinstalled and it worked. π THANK YOU SOOOOOOOO MUCH DUDE. I use this program ALOT. π If I knew you IRL I’d totally kiss you right now. Lol. Thanks again. π
My pleasure to serve, but…….
It was the kissy part, it made me blush. I’m Canadian.
Bart ‘n’ Travis, sittin’ in a tree

Lmao. Thanks again dude. π
You are welcome. Glad to help.
Bart. too share the same emotional urge to kiss you. tried installing this so many times, but after following every step you suggested it worked :] thank you, you Canadian you π
canadian, eh? what’s that aboot then? XD
I’ve done everything above, and I still get error 1603. I’m running Windows XP and there’s definitely enough space available for Photoshop. I also uninstalled Photoshop CS3 and other Adobe programs. Are there any suggestions as to what I should do?
I just used the CS3Clean Script and the error still shows up π
Well, I got CS4 to fully install. Thank you to all that contributed solutions.
Hi,
I tried installaing CS4 several times but all I got is a message saying Adobe failed to install Photoshop CS4, it happens towards the end of the installation. After running clening scripts I tried a few times but again the same problem. I ended up re-installing Vista, and the same problem happend! A fresh new installation of Vista, but it still didn’t help. any ideas anyone? I’m lost…
I have an HP Pavillion DV6500. I saw in a few places the HP laptops have a problem with CS4, could this be the reason?
many thanks.
Idan
I Know I’m not a teckie, but when I purchase a real disc an not a download I expect it to work. I don’t feel I should have to reconfigure my computer to make it work. I have had all the same problems as you folks, and I still can’t get it to download fully.
Have any of your thrown in the towel, and asked for a refund?
Thanks
Keloh
I have to admit PS CS4 Extended was a problem child trying to get the software to load. So bad I had to reformat due to the DRM it puts in the registry. Couldn’t clean the registry because the CS4 Un-install tool was not available back then. Works ok now with issues. Once it is up and running right it has a lot of value for what I do like the 3d. I will sit on the sidelines on the next round though.
THANK YOU BOTH IDAN AND DAVid,
I dont thing you shoudld have to reformat due to the DRM in the registry. I have no idea what that is or how to begin fixing it.
I just feel when a new product is put on the shelf for sale, and you meet the requirements. It should work. Especially when you have paid good hard money for the program.
I guess I have to get up at 6:00 a.m. to speak to a tec… I sure hope he can figure it out. Or I will ask for a full refund. It is not my fault if a program simply does not load. I would not know that until I tried to install the program.
Thanks for listening I will let you know how it works out. Keloh.

Good evening.
Well I told you I would let you know how things went. So much first call to Support yesterday morning was minimal. Austin told me the module "j" script was loaded but the call to dllRegistryServer failed. Error Code Ox80004005.
Austin said he would get back to me this morning at 6:30 a.m. I was up at the black of dawn… waiting patiently for him to call before I headed to work. Well.. you guessed it .. he did not call this morning. Not really surprised, I know they don’t have an answer, but he could have just said that, and I could have gotten a few more hours of sleep. Very poor customer service.
Has anyone else been told this information when they called support. Like I said I’m not a teckie, so I’m going to see if I can get a full refund. It’s kind of funny, Austin gave me a Customer Id number,
went on line tonight used the number, there is no record of that Id number. Make me wonder if he just made that up. oh well..
night all.
night Keloh.. Betsy
Good evening all.
I think I must be the only one out there that can’t install this darn program. The lates information they have sent me is to stop the installer and enter a string of code… I’m not a programmer. It’s just not good enough. Why should I or anyone else have to mess around so much with this instalation.
I wish there was some way, to make them accountable. It’s not like a small out lay of $50.00 for a basic, photo editor program, I’m sure we all have that. The tec support, is interesting, if you can understand them. Then each time you call you get someone else, and your starting all over. The customer service for Adobe is less than helpfull when requesting a refund. I’m still working on that…
Buyer be ware.
Keloh.
I’d done all the solutions written above
1. I have 5.05 GB free disk space.
2. All clear
3. I had already done this
4. Updated.
5. Already had.
6. Done.
Can anyone help me please?
Hello all,
I was having the same problems as everyone else: I would get the ‘error 1603’ message when I tried installing CS4 products. I followed all the above suggestions and it would always end the same – but fianlly – EUREKA! – I got it to work. Here is how:
First – definitely do all of the above processes, especially the ones Bart suggests.
Second- Check out this website: <

What seemed to work for me was to make sure I was running a ‘simplified mode’ and putting the insatallation files on the desktop. Once I made sure that my Avast and Mcaffee software wasn’t running (not just ‘turned off’, but niot running) I was able to install all my CS4 products! What a relief, I was just about to return them all!
To stop services in Vista, press Cnrl-Alt-Dlt and then look for the Services button in the lower right hand corner of the window. Stop ALL nonessntial services (I reccomend unplugging from the internet when you kill your virus software) and reboot. Once you install from the desktop hopefully it works for you like it did for me. Good luck!!
thanks for posting your results laird!
I just got the trial version to install after trying for 12 hrs.
I’m on Vista Home basic, acer laptop, I tried everything ..
I edited the registry (see this post Alan Musgrove, "critical error during PS CS4 installation" #20, 22 Jan 2009 12:56 pm </webx?14/19> and deleated the keys back to default), turned off firewall and anti virus, disconnected from the internet, shut down all my running programs including the acer empowering technology application( using windows taks manager) ran adobe wincleancs4 script twice, then cs3 clean script, made sure the adobe cs4 trial file that I downloaded was on my desk top, then turned off the uac (user account control).
Whilst running the clean up scripts to level 2 (maximum) I also chose the option to remove the adobe media player . One of the clean up scripts gives the option to do this, can’t remember which one.
I already have shockwave player and reader 9.1 installed, but I chose to install all the items on the trial. It worked like a dream.
I tried every fix you could imagine before, but IMHO it was probably running Both clean scripts to (level 2 with the remove media player option) as explained and finally turning off the UAC that did the trick.
Maybe if I’d turned off the uac first. I may not have had to do the others. all in all, by doing everything above, it finally worked.
Hope that helps someone.
Thanks all.
I thought it wouldn’t run in vista home basic… hmm…
