Photoshop backwards compatibility

I have PS CS2, client has PS CS3. Do I need to ask him to Save As or Export in some special way so that I can open his PSD file?

I’ll upgrade if that’s my only choice, but I don’t use Photoshop a lot, and I was hoping to get another few years out of it.

A PSD will will work just fine so you can edit type.

I should mention that the file I’m getting from my client has type layers, and I want to make sure these remain editable. I see that "Maximize Compatibility" saves a flattened version of the file, and I don’t know if this means that the resulting file contains only a flattened version of the document, or if the resulting file contains a flattened version and an unflattened version of the document. If it does contain two versions, will CS2 be able to open the unflattened version?

Maybe I want to be asking for a Photoshop PDF (PDP) file?
