I just built a new machine and installed Vista 64 w/8GB RAM. After installing CS3, I opened the dialog to set my preferences and found that (in the performance tab) it only sees 3255 MB. Is this a known issue when installing to a 64 bit OS?

Thanks for any help!

With 32 bit OSes you have to apply a specific setting to get Photoshop or other programs to see 3 gbs of ram.
It was mentioned recently in this newsgroup and works quite well. This is not supposed to be necessary with Vista 64.
However it is VISTA you are working with, which will soon have a bastard child hidden with the name Windows 7 (Vista with a different GUI). What in Vista reliably works like it is supposed to, whether 32 or 64 bits? Its a miracle that the OS even boots.
Does your computer see all 8 gbs under System Information? All 8gbs must be identical with no tweaks to the timings in the BIOS. If all 8gbs are not seen the problem may be with your motherboard as many simply cannot support that much ram seated in all 4 slots. A BIOS update may be available or you may be SOL. Sad to say MOBO manufacturers lie about the actual performance of their boards, which are designed for 32 bit OSes and not expected to actually use more than 4gbs of RAM, preferably in just two slots. I do not recall seeing third party tests of MOBOs under 64 bit OSes with more than 4gbs of RAM but hopefully these will become more common. On the other hand, unless you are working with multi-hundred mb files and a quad core processor more than 4gbs of RAM does more for your ego than it does for your computer.

Although I know that many have, I have had none of the issues you state. I’ve been running vista 32 on my Production Machine since before RTM and have never looked back. I do have a few XP machines, but I use those as my ‘workhorses’, to which I offload tasks so as not to tie up my main machine.

Yes, the bios and Vista 64 reports all 8 gigs, as do all Vista utilities and 3rd party utilities as well. I should have been clearer in my OP. My apologies.

Actually, I do work with files that are often several hundred MBs, often saving Tif and PSD files with multiple layers and channels. I haven’t bogged CS3 down as of yet, and who knows, perhaps it sees all 8 and is reporting only 3200 and change. I guess it really doesn’t matter unless I experience issues. But, of course, if You (or anyone else) can think of something that might resolve the issue, I’m glad to hear it.

Thanks for your response!
