I have just installed Photoshop CS4 Extended and am looking to enable the OpenGL Drawing function but it is greyed out. I have Dell Precision t5400 with Quad core Xeon E5410, 2gb RAM, Club 3D 8800GTS 640mb RAM graphics card on XP Service pack 2. I just updated the graphics drivers from nVidia and downloaded the AllowOldGPUS_ON.reg and restarted the PC. The option to Enable OpenGL Drawing is still greyed out. Any ideas on how to get it working?

You may have to update to SP3 for XP. Not sure, I don’t use XP.

Adobe’s requirements for CS4 allow XP SP2 although SP3 is recommended.

Also, if we are to believe Adobe engineers – and I would lean in that direction – OpenGL issues are typically related to video drivers. Apparently we need to pound long and hard on the video card manufacturers to update their drivers for the various cards and OS combinations. I’m not holding my breathe …

Indeed, NVIDIA is pushing only their high-end Quadro CX for CS4 use (retailing in Canada at about $2000).

Are you using dual screens? If so, check your NVidia Desktop settings and try different setups. It’s possible that the order of your screens is not correct and PS tries to open on the secondary display, which in some configurations are not accelerated. Similarly, large resolutions or screens with different resolutions may throw things off track. Other than that I can only presume that your card is not correctly identifying itself to PS, which is also a dirver issue. In such cases, using SoftQuadro/ RivaTuner may provide a solution by manipulating the vendor string…

Thanks for the advice especially Mylenium. My 8800GTS is now an all sing all dancing QuadroFX4600. Photoshop picked it up and OpenGL is operational.
Thanks again.

I have the same problem although my card is an Adobe qualified Nvidia 8800GT. My Primary monitor is a Samsung TFT with DVI input and my Secondary is a Hitachi 19" crt VGA via DVI adaptor to the dual head card. I have the latest Nvidia driver and it meets the Adobe open GL standard and shader level. However I also cannot get CS4 to "ungray" the open GL menu. I get the error message saying that my card does not meet the Adobe requirement for open GL.

Perhaps someone will find a solution.

Good grief, I just looked up the QuadroFX4600 and it’s twice the price of full CS4! Sorry, just had to say it.

Looks like James just needed to be ‘enabled’ for the that purchase 😉 :). It’s a good card for 3D especially if it’s anything like the 5600 – My buddy has one of those and it’s quick.
