I was about to download the trial version of CS4 and noticed that the download was the extended version, even though I had clicked on the link for the standard version.

My question is, do you get a choice as to which version you install? I have no interest in the extended version and want to try out the standard version only. Don’t really want to have to figure out which features are in standard and which in extended.

Thanks for any info.

If you buy the standard version when you enter the serial number the extended features will vanish.

He makes a good point though, Bob. He doesn’t want to have to figure out which features are extended while he is trying them. Adobe should have a switch in the demo that will turn off the extended options (since it seems to be there for when the serial numbers are added).

Had a response from Adobe customer services, but it leaves me as confused as ever.

They first say that the standard and extended versions have different download links. They then say if you download the trial of the standard version you will receive the same product.

The link they give leads to a "Page does not exist" page. If you go direct to the trial download page, there are indeed two links in the drop down list, but they both lead to exactly the same page. The one for the extended version.

So I have asked them to clarify their answer further. Here is their first response.

"Thank you for contacting Adobe Customer Service.

Regarding your issue, we would like to inform you that Photoshop CS4 and Photoshop CS4 Extended trial download links are different. So if you download a trial version of Photoshop CS4 you will receive the same product.

that link does not appear to work and if you go in the regular way, as has been indicated, you end up at the "CS4 extended" download page. I wonder if support has bothered to check the link they are handing out for the CS4 regular version from the outside (it may be one of those cases where the link works within Adobe’s network, but from the outside it breaks).

just so you understand there is only one version of Photoshop. the serial number is what unlocks the extended features or locks/hides them as the case may be.

The sure reason Adobe does this is they want you to see what you will be missing so they have all features available in the trial hoping you will spend the extra money. What you need to do is look at the comparison chart and see what the extended features are and not use them.

I wish Adobe would say that there is only one version. In their reply to me they say there are two different links for the two versions.

The trouble with looking at the comparison charts is that they only give the main differences. They don’t give detailed differences within the program. I want to go through all of the menu options and see what they do, and if they are different from previous versions. If I don’t know for sure which menu options are only for the standard version, I would be wasting my time.

I was hoping to find some way of just evaluating the standard version, or at least of turning off the extended version in the trial download. If the serial number for the standard version turns off the extended features, it must be a relatively simple job to block the unwanted features in the trial version.

Adobe programs are so bloated these days, I really was hoping not to have to waste more disk space with all the junk that is in the extended version, which I will never use – ever.
