Help! I have recently upgraded to CS4 and am finding way too many things that have changed and I cannot figure out how to do some very basic things (like my clone tool does not work the way it used to and I can’t figure out how to clone anymore!). I clicked on Help on the toolbar which takes me to
<http://www.adobe.com/support/photoshop/?trackingid=DYNQE> and I click on "Learn CS4." I am then directed to a page where I am told that there are NO VIDEOS available!

Please direct me! I don’t have time for a lot of experimentation right now.

Not to be flippant, but the lesson here is that when you upgrade, you keep your older versions loaded on your hard to drive so you can perform real work in an environment you’re used to, and make the transition to the new version as you have time.

Now, having wagged my finger about that, I’d recommend giving the LiveDocs a thorough read: <http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Photoshop/11.0/>

Also, I’m seeing a good bit of video content available on Adobe TV. Click through and exercise patience…stuff seems to take awhile to load there. If your web-surfing apps aren’t strictly up-to-date be aware also that you may need to upgrade to the latest broswer plugins to get it to work.

Plus, a Google search for photoshop CS4 tutorials ought to return some useful results.

All good stuff from Phos.

Susan

Didn’t you think to click on Help? It leads to a trail of wonderful resources including those linked above!

John, yes, I did click on Help which is how I got to the Adobe TV site that told me there are no videos available under the category "Learn CS4"…hence my extreme frustration. It does not appear that there is any "local" help files at all with CS4.

Phos, I would have LOVED to have kept my older version! Unfortunately I work in an environment where the IT "professionals" make all decisions related to new equipment and they decided that it was not necessary for me to retain my older version. I’ll refrain from the remainder of my soapbox speech related to who controls what on a computer.

I’ll take a look at the recommended sites above.

Thank you both for your help!

If you need to send your IT department some pointers, I have a feeling many folks here will supply you the words. Counterpoint: what’s one (not even good) reason to delete CS3 a month after its replacement (still in .0?) has come out? I could see six months from now removing the clutter/forcing your workflow forward, but today…

hard drive space?
those ugly cs3 icons?
toach?

There is no video "Learn CS4"? 8o

There are 33 videos, on that page, starting with "Introducing Photoshop CS4" and continuing with names like "Working with Masks", etc, etc.

What kind of browser have you got?

On that page are also links to Photoshop Help in HTML and PDF form.

Thanks J. I have the words, I just won’t say them here because I would be preaching to the proverbial choir!

And, with a brand new Dell Optiplex 755 with Intel Core2 Quad CPU @ 2.66 GHz, 3.25 GB RAM and 150 GB hard drive, I am quite certain that space and performace were of no concern!

John, when I go out there, it says "There are no videos available". I have ie 6.0 sp3. There are also no links on that page. Just a product listing down the right hand side that checks (or unchecks) the product when clicked. Now you know why I was so frustrated. I will always go through my available resources before posting…but it seems that I don’t have those available.

The document Phos directed me to looks like it will be of significant benefit to me and I will be spending much time reading it over the weekend.

Thanks again.

Well worth the time, for sure.

I have ie 6.0 sp3.

Is that Internet Explorer 6.0?

They’re up to 8.0 now with Internet Explorer, but why anybody is not using Firefox I can’t imagine.

Are you on a company crippled computer by any chance?

Cloning is different, and a vast improvement for a habitual cloner like me. You can revert to the old-fashioned way if you want to.!

I just can’t imagine even a halfway-smart IT person or department deciding that it’s wise to attempt switching to a new version of ANY software on production systems, much less without giving the people who actually work and depend on those systems a way to access the older, steadfast and known version in the event of a production stopping problem.

Early adoption is for intrepid individuals or smaller, more flexible companies who could switch back in a hurry, if necessary. And often, the new software is only put on a separate testing system so that troubleshooting is easier and less likely to interfere with production. Even those folks usually know it’s wise to give new software a thorough shakedown cruise before switching over to it exclusively.

Regarding your problem with the videos: I’m betting that I.E. 6 is either too outdated itself to support the latest browser plugins needed to view the content, or if it isn’t, that the plugins themselves need to be brought up to the latest available. Ask the brilliant IT team if they’re as enthusiastic about updating your browser as they are about updating Photoshop!
