My new graphic designer sends me his PSD files (MAC 6.01) and though I can open other files from other MAC people, his files can not be opened. I get a (german) messsage stating that this file cannot be opened since it seems not to be a psd file.
We did also a barebone tests with a black rectangle and he did send the files via a) http upload and b) email.

he can read all my files. I cannot read any of his files.

Other mac user can use http upload as well as email. Their files open without a problem on my machine (WIN PSD 6.01).

I couldn’t find anything in the forum so far — so if anyone has an idea I would be very glad. I can send you the files to test them if you like.

Thanks for your help

Have him check his Preferences – under File Handling it should have the box checked that says "Always Maximize Compatability for Photoshop (PSD) files".

Is your graphic designer putting an extension on the filenames when he/she saves them?

Macs do not need the extension(.psd for photoshop) but windows does. Some hardcore mac users refuse to accept that anyone would stoop so low as to open a "professional" graphics file on a windows machine and they purposely don’t add the extension when they save a file. Giving your designer the benefit of the doubt however, maybe he/she doesn’t realize that the extension is needed for a windows machine or they just forgot to add it. It is easy to forget when you don’t work in a cross platform environment all the time. them.

Save one of the bad files he/she sends to you to your harddrive. Locate the file and rename it with the .psd extension after the filename. Now try to open it with photoshop.

Dan:
Thank you!
I am aware of the extension problem. This was not the point in this case. ut cool that you thought of it.

YrbkMgr
This sounds cool!

I guess I check YrbkMgr’s suggestion and get back to you with the result

Thanks for your help folks! Keep the web alive!

People like that should be stripped naked in public and thoroughly thrashed.

haha, YrbkMgr. Good point. But I think these people DO strip themselves by acting like that. Thanks God I haven’t met someone like that in the last 3 years. But I remember them well …

Have no feedback yet from the guy. Will tell the forum if it worked.

YrbkMgr: THAT was the solution. Thank you again and take care of you!

I still get two files in my mailbox. both have the same name and one is big, the other very small (is that the ressource fork or how it is called?) but I just open the bigger file and everything is there. Can I safely ignore the other file?

Nik says thanks to the people of the forum

Can I safely ignore the other file?

Personally, no clue. Phosphor is the Mac guy here. He’d probably know. But try it without the resource fork and if you have no problems, then <shrug> I guess…

Ignore it. The PC doesn’t use it and anytime you send a PC file to a mac the mac creates a resource fork for the file so you dont need it for anything.
