I need help. I have an image with several layers. The background layer is transparent. When I merge the layers, the background becomes white. Can anyone tell me what I did wrong or didn’t do that prevented my background from staying transparent. Thanks!

Saving as jpeg. Transparency is not supported with that file format.

JPGs don’t support transparency. Other than that, you can’t flatten either without the file doing to white. Instead, make sure there is no layer called "background" with italic type, and then choose merge visible from the layers panel flyout menu or the layer application menu.

Not sure what your needs are for this file. If for the web save file as a .png file. If placing into another program try saving as a .psd file and then place.

Thank you all! I have an image that I was going to put on a t-shirt. The t-shirt company needs either a .jpg or a .png. I will get rid of the background layer or name it something other than background, and then merge and save as a .png. Many thanks!
