ICO transparency problem

Hi. For a lot of ICO files, PS CS3 ignores the transparency information and displays a solid background instead. I can see the transparency in other apps.

For example this here opens in PS CS3 with a black background instead of transparency:

Am I doing something wrong?

Icons have no real transparency, as they are palette-based just like GIFs. In essence they are BMP files in which the operating system will simply interpret the color at index 0 as transparent as will any other application relying on your OS’ standard handling for this stuff. Only high-resolution truecolor icons (48x48px and up) introduced with WinXP can contain true Alpha channels, but this is merely optional and for practical reasons, almost no one ever makes use of this feature. So to cut a long story short: The behavior is perfectly normal. If you are really working with icons a lot, get a specialty app such as Axialis Icon Workshop….
