I’ve gone straight from CS(1) to 4, so some of my gripes may just be related to all the changes that I’ve missed, however…

1. Tool Tips stop working randomly. Rebooting or restarting PS does not necessarily fix this. This happens even after the application has been sitting unused for a few minutes and while I’m not using any other programs.

2. Icons in the Windows OS file dialog box come up black, also randomly.

3. Soft proofing a file with a non-default profile and then closing the file so that there are no others open resets the default profile choice. One used to have to pick the default with no files open for it to become the default. Even this is a stupid way to do it. What’s wrong with an explicit "Set default profile" button in the dialog box?

4. Clicking on an adjustment layer opens the dialog box
for the tool whether this is what is wanted or not. Dismissing the panel by putting it into the back of the group stops this behavior (for awhile). The dialog box should only appear when it is explicitly summoned, say by double clicking on the layer.

5. The new adjustment layer panel is unneeded. I can select the tool needed by setting a keyboard shortcut or off the menu. I don’t need to see tools I’ll never use and a long list of irrelevant defaults.

6. Management of floating vs tabbed windows is clumsy.
All of these should be easily controlled via hot keys, and there should be options for arranging floating windows in several styles (horizontal, vertical, etc). Tabbed windows don’t make drag and drop between files very simple.

7. There are too many secret spots that need to be clicked on. For example in a layer one can click on the layer icon, the name, the mask icon or the blank space and then there are variations of clicks with a key. This is poor design all options available to a person should be visible on
screen.

8. Invoking the layer adjustment tool should not create
the actual layer until one has accepted the adjustments. Sometimes you just want to experiment and see what things will look like. Under the new scheme you have to explicitly delete the layer instead of accepting it. This is also
a bad interface design, changes should always have to be accepted explicitly, not just happen. The same goes for
altering the values in an adjustment layer.

1. Tool Tips stop working randomly.

This seems to be a problem for a few people. No fix known.

2. Icons in the Windows OS file dialog box come up black

What? in the Open dialog?

4. Clicking on an adjustment layer opens the dialog box for the tool

That’s the idea. You can view another adjustment by clicking that layer.

5. The new adjustment layer panel is unneeded

So close it.

6. Management of floating vs tabbed windows is clumsy.

Have you really studied the help files (and the posts in here from people struggling)?

7. There are too many secret spots that need to be clicked on.

Just learn what you need for your work and forget the rest.

8. Invoking the layer adjustment tool should not create the actual layer until one has accepted the adjustments.

If you like it your way, just use the modal adjustment (eg Ctrl + L)

On the whole the general reaction to the UI seems to be positive. Criticism tends to come from people set in their ways who are not prepared to adapt.

If they see the changes as retrograde, or their "Workflow" is so inviolate, they don’t have to upgrade.
