Both my Desktop and Laptop (XP32 SP3) are among those suffering mating problems with Photoshop 11; one of the things I’m using as an indicator in my periodic troubleshooting I’d like just to confirm is indeed a symptom (i.e. not encountered on problem-free systems)…?

Selection>Refine Edges: (In either OGL or non-OGL mode)… Preview shows the refined results as expected but then… For me, unchecking Preview shows not the unrefined selection but reveals the whole image (or layer) with no evidence of any selection at all. This in all Preview modes other than ‘marquee’ where the unrefined selection does get shown.

Notable that this behaviour does not happen when Refine Edges is accessed from a mask via the Adjustment Layers dialogue: there, it behaves completely normally – ie as in CS3.

Would appreciate if someone could just confirm this is not something found in setups where Photoshop’s running properly. Thanks…

Photoshop is working fully as advertised here, so:

I see the "new" behavior (where unchecking preview reverts to the full image) when Refine Edge is brought up from a straight selection, including loading it from a layer mask or adjustment layer mask.

But with a layer mask active, clicking on Mask Edge in the Masks panel will bring up Refine Edge with the old/CS3 behavior.

To my great relief, I should say, because half the usefulness is gone when you can’t do an on-the-fly comparison between refined and unrefined.

Aha… So, FreeAgent, if I’m reading you right this is not something linked to failings in my systems, but present also where PS CS4 is fully functioning? (I think you are among those without problems, yes?)

Not a symptom of incompatibilty then, but a bug? Cos surely losing the Preview/nonPreview here cannot have been intentional? Makes Refine Edges practically unusable…

Which is why I’d assumed it was working ok (a la CS3) since it seems something so fundamental yet I’d not noticed it mentioned by others as a fault – and in fact thought it might be somehow key to some of the problems: marquee preview working but other preview modes, dependent on redraw, not – plus it working fine via Adj Levels/Masks panel…

Anyway, now at least I know not to expect that to be other than it is… Sure hope it does get fixed, though…!

Thanks for the info…

That’s my opinion, yes. But of course this could be the only symptom I’m seeing…but I don’t think that’s very likely since everything else is working perfectly.

Anyone else?
