I am editing a photo (jpg format) in Photoshop CS3. I insert links to a slice within the photo. If the file is saved as a pdf the links will work. But whenever I save the file as a jpg or gif or any other type of picture format the links no longer work.

I am trying to make a picture that I can insert into an email so that they can click on a certain part of the picture (not the whole picture) and they will be redirected to a webpage. Is there another way I should go about doing this? Or is there something that I’m doing wrong?

JPGs and GIFs cannot contain links. You need HTML code to contain the link. Read up on HTML and in particular, the effectiveness of HTML email, as everyone seems to be blocking it nowadays.

only people who DON’T want to get viruses or claim the riches from their nigerian cousins who just want to get their money out of the country before the king has them beheaded. 😉

I leave HTML on in Thunderbird. But everything is screened by Mailwasher first, so nothing evil gets through.

It’s a shame we have to jump through hoops because of a few nasties.

If you want an honest opinion: Scrap it! Technical issues aside, most mail users will suppress automated display of inline-graphics, code and attachments, and therefore you will not reach your audience. If at all, this should contain the HTML code, where the actual files are called up from an external server (but even that is prone to failure (cross-site/ cross-domain referal issues), so people with HTML-enabled mail viewing may possibly see it. Still, none of this is standardized, so you’d do a lot better by simply attaching the link as text in your signature.
