I have PhotoShop 4, unfortunately. When I saved my pictures at 300 dpi inRGB and imported them into a PDF program called Serif, Serif said they were 175 dpi. I saved them in CMYK in PSD and Serif said they were 200 dpi. I want to print the artwork in a book and would like to send them to the printer as 300 dpi.

I vaguely remember Serif. (You might say I am Sans Serif at the present time. Groan).

The dpi being reported it not as important as the pixel measurements. If you have a 2 inch image that is 600 pixels, that is all that is important, not the dpi being reported by the program. However, I can’t be sure that Serif is not downsizing the resolution, which would be a bad thing.

You might want to send a test file to the printers, and see if the resolution is sufficient. If not, get rid of Serif.

Thank you. How do I get a 2′ picture to be 600 dpi?

600 pixels … not dpi. Forget about dpi.

I am referring to the Image>Image Size dimensions in Photoshop. The image is 2" and the pixel count is 600 pixels in that direction.

Oh my god, I think I’ll love you forever. I have change 48 pages of illustrations, so I’m not sure it works, but the painting sure looks brighter.
But what about the CMYK. If I go to <File – color – Separation Tables>, it says <To CMYK>. Does that mean that when I send the book to the publisher it will be in CMYK rather than RGB?

Printers want CMYK not RGB.

I understand printers want CMYK. Please see message above because I’m not sure I changed the work from RGB to CMYK correctly. Did I?

PhotoShop 4 doesn’t have File/conver to profile. As suggested here, I reduced my psd picts to 2" and 600 dpi and then inserted them into my book. They look brighter but when I saved them as a pdf, the program said they were 175 dpi again. Arrggghhh!!

What are the settings you selected when you saved as PDF?

Hi. This is the first time I looked at the settings. I just used what was checked by Serif 3 Co. Settings say the following:
preview pdf file, include hyperlinks, include pageHints, include bookmarks. Under <advanced> transparency – use 8 bit alpha channel, embed fonts, transparent areea dpi 300
Under <color management> output color space (it was RGB, I just changed it to CMYK), Optimize for fast Web View.

I tried inserting my painted borders from PhotoShop 3 at 2" and 600 dpi as someone suggested. That didn’t work except the colors looked brighter and crisper. When I saved it, the Serif Page Plus publishing program said it was 175 dpi.
Then I tried inserting them at 6" at 600 dpi but that froze the computer. I reduced the border on my page and then copied and pasted it on each page. Now I can’t access that pdf.
