Hi,

When trying to open a Nef (Raw) file from Nikon D90 in Photoshop CS3 the following happens:

– Nikon Scan 4.0 tries to open (why scan?)
and deliveres the message "buffer overrun,
program must be terminated", the header
for this message is "Visual C++ runtime
library"

The default application to open Nef files
is Nef launcher 1.2 according to Adobe Bridge, so why this Nikon Scan 4.0 fuss?

So please tell me what to do to be able to
open Nef files in Photoshop CS3.

Thank You,
Martti

Raw files open in Adobe Camera Raw not Photoshop.

Photoshop needs the version of Adobe Camera Raw that is compatible with your camera.

Thanks John,

I have downloaded the latest update for CameraRaw, now the problem is that Windows cannot open the file when I double click on it. I will try to import it to Photoshop, though I do not exactly know how to do it – any hints?

Thanks,
Martti

I should have written a bit more. The latest update for ACR, compatible with Photoshop CS3 is version 4.6. If this is too old for your camera* you have to use the DNG convertor

* I suggest you do some reading (especially the links at the top) in the ACR Forum at <http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?13@@.3bb6a85c>.

Further questions would be better posted there. Include exact system and camera details.

The instructions on how to install are all there too.

It seems that ACR 5.0 and forward include support for the D90. Sorry, though, ACR 5.0 won’t work with CS3. Surely though the Nikon software which comes with the D90 can handle D90 raw files.

I think you have two programs mixed up. Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) that supports your camera is available for Photoshop CS4, not CS3. You need to either upgrade to CS4 to have ACR 5.x; or save as DNG using the Adobe DNG convertor (then open with Photoshop CS3); or use your Nikon software to save to a compatible file for your CS3.

Viewing the nef files from Windows is another issue. Windows can open your camera’s nef files for viewing if you install Nikon RAW codec 1.6.0 You can find it here:
