Has anyone tried the masking plugins by Extensis? It appears to be similar to the Extraction tool. Does it do a better job? Is it worth the $? I would be using it to for extracting people from images and having to do lots of them.

Thanks.

Exingo,

My comments are based upon only a quick look at Mask Pro, as I’ve never really used it but rather only have a demo version. Over the years, I’ve heard a lot of good things said about both Mask Pro and Corel Knockout. As for the Extract command in Photoshop, I’m not sure when it was introduced but I suspect it is the newest of these 3 tools. Again, I’ve not used the Extract command much either, but what I do like about it is a sense of simplicity and speed of use that appears to do a pretty good job with extracting an image from a relatively simple background. Mask Pro on the other hand seems to require a bit more time to use yet with a palette of colors to be kept and to be removed, it appears to me to offer a finer degree of control of masking. If speed of use is important and most of your backgrounds are relatively simple, I’m guessing that you may be better off just saving your money and using the Extract command. As backgrounds become more complex, you might consider Mask Pro.

I’ve seen no response to your post for a while now, but I’d have thought there to be some PS users here who would have a good deal of experience with Mask Pro and KnockOut, as well as use of the Extract command. Hopefully some of them will eventually chime in here with more experienced recommendations.

For my limited needs, I certainly can’t see spending the $$ on Mask Pro when using the Extract and Background Eraser tools in Photoshop serve me well enough.

Regards,

Daryl

I’ve used MaskPro for several years, and recently upgraded to version 3. I like it a lot.

Extensis has a 30-day trial version you can download, along with a user manual. Give it a shot and see if it’s right for you.
