I have a question !!
I am using Photoshop 7, just playing around with the basics etc., I d/l some sports logos to play around with (gif’s), when I use them in Photoshop 7 I can’t use the layers function (it is locked out) and I can’t unlock it.
I notice in the title after the info it has (index) including the brackets, for example:

% (index)

In the layer palette, the first layer is titled "index" with the lock symbol and I am unable to unlock it etc, to do anything with it in the layer palette.
Usually the first thing in the layer palette is the "background" Is there a way I can get around this ??

Thanking all in advance !!

Gifs are in Indexed Color mode. Go to Image>Mode and switch to RGB.

goto Image>Mode>RGB, then you can use layers…gifs are saved as one layer and are in Indexed color mode, this must be changed in order to use layers

the indexed colors is what makes a gif so flexible on internet webpages it only saves the colors that are used and adds them in a color-table.
e.g. a logo existing out off 3 colors (filesizes are made up)
logo saved as BMP => 256 colors embedden and low compression (200 KB) logo saved as JPG => miljons off colors with a compressionlevel, fonts may be blurred due to anti-aliasing => data loss (85 KB)
logo saved as GIF => the 3 colors are embedded => no data loss (10 KB)
