Can anyone tell me how do I go about importing AutoCAD (.dwg) files into Photoshop CS4 Extended?

There are different ways to approach this. It depends on what you want to do with AutoCAD data. What’s your plan?

At this point, I’m wanting to play around with the .dwg file inside CS4 Extended to see if it’s worth buying the upgrade to enhance the textures and lighting further in PS. The .dwg file was not created inside AutoCAD. I built the project inside another program called 2020 and exported the project out of there to a .dwg file.

So, you’re a kitchen designer?

I’m not a designer but I do put the designs on the computer and I’m interested in seeing how much more I can do with the designs inside the new CS4 Extended as far as texturing, color, lighting and so fourth. 🙂

If you are working with a 3D DWG file, you’ll need to convert to OBJ, 3DS, etc…

Does DWG even allow textures? I haven’t bothered to mess with 3D in CS4 yet but Photoshop CS3 paints on image maps, not bare naked models. I’d look to a real 3D app to convert DWG and apply textures.

Adobe themselves have told me CS4 Extended, not standard CS4, takes .dwg files and allows you to work with and enhance actual 3D models inside CS4 Extended.

…. then maybe Adobe should post that on their marketing web pages because DWG is not one of the file formats that they list.

(and I was referring to Extended as this thread is about PS Extended)

Why are you not testing this with the free 30-day trial?

Interesting that they no longer have AutoCAD listen as one of the programs it works with anymore. Myself and another employee remember seeing AutoCAD listen in the area where it talks about CS4 Extended’s capabilities for architects and engineers. Now, it seems, they’ve changed the layout and content and no longer have it listed there. I have noticed in the help for Illustrator CS4, that it can import .dwg files. Perhaps they mean’t you can work on them that way. Import the AutoCAD file into Illustrator CS4 and ave it out to open inside Photoshop CS4 Extended. I spoke with an actual tech rep at Adobe and they told me Photoshop CS4 Extended works with AutoCAD files. And yes, I have installed a 30 day trial copy of CS4 Extended to play around with.
