I am using Photoshop CS2 and have windows XP.

I want to create images that simulate original artwork such as oil paintings so that the images show brush strokes, layers of paint and paint blobs?

Is this possible?
If so how do I do it?

I intend to print the images onto canvas to simulate original artwork.

There are artistic effect filters in PS but most people don’t think much of them. There are also 1000s of artistic brushes available on line.

I think most serious strivers after these effects use the program Painter.

I’m not even sure Painter’s up to it – despite it’s hard efforts. But, then I’m a fine artist and I feel these programs cannot, yet, simulate all the variables involved – the interaction between physical paint and dilution via turpentine / water etc. The randomness of this interaction with gravity, variable drying times…….now, real-time oil paint simulation, i.e. 3 days to dry, would be something….I’d better stop!!…

As far as physical looking brush strokes are concerned I like what Artrage2 has to offer but it’s colour mixing is all wrong.

Painter can do it pretty well and can do what Chris indicated as being necessary to create a real oil paint simulation. It does have quite a learning curve if you do not have a background in fine art.

Where do I find the artistic effect filters in PhotoShop? Where do I find the 1000’s of artistic brush strokes online?

Ian…

A relatively new discovery for me…go visit: <http://www.noupe.com>

From there you will find links extending out to beyond the horizon—from one site,to another, to another—full of good brushes, vector objects, coding tips, and all kinds of stuff.

Dig around through the links to follow and find other sites out on the landscape, bookmark the ones that look like they update often. There are mind-boggling amounts of free good resources available

You didn’t mention your version, but you will likely find artistic filters on the menu under Filters/Artistic.
If you Google "Photoshop brushes" you should find around 1,700,000 hits (give or take a few), many of them being free. There’s also the Photoshop Exchange on Adobe’s web site.

But with all due respect to Photoshop, it’s probably not the best choice to create something that looks like an original oil painting. You probably need Corel Painter and a tablet. There is a lower price "Essentials" version of Painter you may want to start off with.

If you are looking for something that will automagically make a photograph look like a Rembrant, I can’t recall seeing anything that would even come close…
