Hi

I tried to build an action to scale a batch of images by 75%, but when I actually run it, it plugs in the inches from the file I built it on. So the image I built the action on ended up 8.25" wide, but it’s a portrait. If I run the same action on a picture that was taken in landscape mode, it doesn’t scale that image by 75%, it scales it to 8.25" wide.

How do you force a scale by percentage instead of absolute measurement?

Thx

Use an action. Record the resize. Use image size and make sure to use percentage. Then run as a batch. On duplicate files 😉 .

That’s exactly what I did, but it didn’t work.. I tried twice, using the ‘pixel dimensions’ fields with percentage values and the ‘document size’ fields with percentage values (two different actions).. both returned the same result, scaling every file to an absolute width (in my case about 8.25" wide) instead of scaling each by 75%.

I also just now tried it filling in ALL the fields where a percentage can be entered.. both in pixel dimensions AND document size.. same result.

I also tried to edit the action itself, by double-clicking the line where the resizing takes place and entering percentages. That didn’t work either, it just defaulted back to 8.25" absolute width.

Look in the action panel and see what’s being recorded. It’s only in pixel size that you need to enter 75%. Make sure that a percentage is being recorded in the action. I’m on a Mac, but my CS3 is recording a percentage in the action. Maybe switch your rulers to percentage through prefs in the action? Maybe you need to reset your prefs too… seems weird it’s not recording a percentage…

I would use the option under Automate/fit image

You just tell it what the max size you want and it will resize either horizontal or vertical image to that size.

It can be used in batch process;give it a try.

When using "Fit Image", it needs to be set using pixels so find out the pixel dept of the image you’re trying to make.

Let’s say you have a 4×6" image at 300 dpi. A 300 dpi image at 6 inches is 1800 pixels. In the "Fit Image" popup, just put 1800 horizontal and 1800 for the vertical as you build your action.

I use this for processing thousands of images for processing a variety of different sizes (thumbnails, 800 pix, 1000pix…) and it works pretty good.

Okay, I’ll check out both of those tomorrow and see if I find a solution.

Thanks!

With a little tweaking, Fit Image worked out.

Thanks to both of you for your help!

Make sure your rulers are also set to percentage when recording the action. You can revert them back when the action is recorded. The action will then use percentage no matter what the rulers are set.
