Hi,
I would like to try and deplicate an effect found on this site <http://www.pixelightcreative.com/>. If anyone knows how this could be achieved or could point me to a tutorial that could show me that would be great. I have tried to locate such a tutorial with no luck. BTW- It is not a simple mosaic tile effect.
Thanks
C

What effect? I see no mosaics there. Why not give us a link to the image?

It is the BG image at the Top of this site.
The patchwork effect only puts a grid on it while not changing the the color tone of anything inside the squares. I would like to add some random darker toned squares to it like on the top part of the BG of this website <http://www.pixelightcreative.com/>. It is not hard to notice the random darker squares which create a pixel-like noise, if you know what I mean. Anymore thoughts as to how this can be achieved? Thanks for your responses.

Here’s the problem with your question, C…

There are ways to get close to that look, but I’m going to make an educated guess that the person who created it just played around until they got something they liked. It’s even entirely possible that the person who created it couldn’t explain how to do it again.

I know that I’ve done some stuff in Photoshop that I haven’t been able to reproduce, and couldn’t explain exactly how I did what I did, 10 minutes after I decided I was done playing around.

So, while suggestions could be made by a dozen different people here, and they may involve some of the same stuff—The "Patchwork filter is a good bet—it’s pretty unlikely anyone would be able to nail the exact "formula" without doing a considerable amount of playing around themselves. Then they’d have to take the time to write it all out so you could mimic the look.

My best suggestion is that you just jump in to the deep end of the Photoshop filter pool and start bravely and boldly experimenting. I’ll bet you’ll find it far more satisfying to come up with a look you can call all your own rather than trying to copy somebody else’s work.

100 pix by 100 pix canvas. Set rulers to pixels. At 10, 20, 30 etc pixels draw guides with shift key down to snap to exact pix. Then use single row marquee to select the 11th, 21st, 31st etc pixels and on a new layer fill with black. Then make a square marquee selection 10 x 10 and make a new layer. Start moving the square around in the grid filling with black (alt/ctrl-backspace). Do 20 or so, then make a new layer and do 20 more. Random. Don’t worry about going over squares already filled, in fact you must. You can always take a layer and rotate it by 90 degrees to make a new layer. Try 10 layers of random squares. Should take 5-10 minutes. Then set transparency of the "tile" layers to 20%, 30%, 45% etc etc. Set a color fill layer on top to color, or soft light and voila.

I’d like that, Phos. I’d prefer Adonis or Beefcake, but I can live with Doormat (DM for short, right?)… 🙂

Google: "trimoon" "impressionist plugin"

This Windows-only plugin can render this effect, including the random darker toned squares. I just did it using a custom preset I created.

If you’re interested, download and install the plugin and then send me an e-mail (click my name above). I will reply with the custom setting file (.set) attached.

Phos- I am not looking for an exact formula or to copy somebody else’s work, I was just wondering if anyone has heard of such a tutorial or plug-in that would accomplish this- forums can be very useful that way- right? Who knows, maybe this person used a tutorial or plug-in to accomplish this. It seems like it would be a useful and common enough looking filter/plug-in so I thought I would ask. Don’t be so quick to shut the door on someone trying to find a quick resolution to an effect. Isn’t that what plug-in’s are for? Ever use them?

Thanks J Maloney and Danny- I will try your suggestions.

Yep. I’ll use all the dang plugins I like and can get my hands on.

What I DON’T do is try to copy somebody else’s style.

For practice? maybe. For use in my own stuff? Nope.

I think you can accomplish this quickly using noise (good strong value), then mosaic (tile as you will; 4-8 seems about right). Then make a pattern that is black lines down two adjoining edges of a tile 4-8 pixels (your mosaic setting). Second layer fill with pattern, set to multiply. I think the handwork in my previous post gives a more natural feel (and I love it), but the pattern replicated across 800 pix will look… like a pattern.
