I just got my first drawing tablet (and the learning curve is steeper than I thought) and I have a question: if I’m using the lasso tool or another similar tool, is there a way to set it so that I can lift the pen up for a second and then go back and continue selecting (or outlining) the object I am trying to lasso? Currently if I lift the pen off the tablet the selection will kind of complete itself which means that I can only use the tool in one single continuous motion.

Anyone have any ideas on how I can trace, then move my hand off the tablet, then go back to what I am tracing without PS automatically finishing the selection?

Marvin,

Go to the properties of the Wacom and check if there is something active that registers as a double click. A double click typically closes a selection.

No, with the Lasso tool. Yes (sort of), with the Polygonal tool. Big enthusiastic yes with the Pen tool.

(The Wacom pen with Photoshop’s Pen tool – a match made in heaven.)

The learning curve with the pen tool is steep, but once learned you will not regret it. With a little practice it will become almost as fast as the other selection options.

If your selection completes itself before you’re finished making your entire selection, no worries.

Just hold down the SHIFT key when you start Lassoing again; once you click-hold-and start drawing, you may release the SHIFT key. Look at your cursor onscreen and you’ll see a little ‘plus’ sign next to it—That indicates that you’ll be adding this new selection to your first (or previous) selection. You may continue to add to selections this way.

You may also want to explore the group of 4 buttons in the Options Bar which are available when you have the Lasso Tool selected. Experiment with them and see how they affect the selection you make, and how they affect subsequent selections.

P4dots, is of course correct! Shift to add to a selection; Alt to subtract from a selection; Shift+Alt for selection intersection.

Been using the Pen tool for so long … the Selection tool just came alive again!
