Hi All,

I have two layers. The lower layer is text. The upper layer is a pattern. I want to show the pattern on the text only, but do not want to show any of the text color (pattern is black, so is text).

How can I accomlish this?

Currently I tried to apply the text layer as a clipping mask for the pattern layer but the text color shows through.

Thanks in advance.

If you google "photoshop pattern on text" there are several tutorials on how to do this.

Thanks Curt,

I had done that already and didn’t find what I consider a good solution. That’s why I was asking here.

I did some playing around and came up with a solution I like. I’m using CS3.

1. Create a layer with the text or shape or whatever you want to use.

2. Create a layer above the previous layer and fill it with the pattern or background you want to use.

3. Apply a clipping mask to the pattern layer (right-click > Create Clipping Mask).

4. Access the Blending Options for the text layer (right-click > Blending Options).

5. Reduce the Fill Opacity to 0.

6. Deselect the Blend Clipped Layer as Group check box.

That gave me the effect I was looking for. You can mess with the setting and other options to achieve what you need.

I hope this helps others.

There was instructions on this site about a year ago that showed how to superimpose faces on large text, but don’t know how to find it now.

Sounds like you arrived at a solution. With PS there are at least 27 ways to get the same output.
