I am new to PS. I am using PS CS4 Extended on a PC and trying to follow along with some Kelby and Lynda training videos. One video shows the author selecting a layer and then clicking on lock transparency.

When I open a new document, add a rectangle shape (which places it on its own layer) then click the shape layer the lock transparency and lock image pixels icons are NOT enabled.

Why not? What am I missing here?

If it helps, there is an example at

I should have been using the selection (marquee) tool instead of the shape tool to complete the tutorials. Duh.
