I have heard that Photoshop CS4 is not meant to be used on XP 64 but has anyone here installed it successfully? Is it working?

I am trying to install it on my XP 64 PCs and no go. One of them gets pretty far into the installation process and conks out. The other (newer, faster PC) gets this error message when trying to fire up the Installer:

File Access Denied

Both of these PCs are running AMD 64 bit MBs. The older one has 2 GB of RAM while the newer one has 8 GB of RAM.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. About ready to return the product …

Either back up to XP 32 or move up to Vista 64.

What make of DVD drive do you have? There have been known issues with Plextor drives.

I have a Liteon 20x DVD RW Drive (ATAPI) internal and a Sony DVD DRU-810A external.

The disk would load fine from the latter in my other system (but the install wouldn’t finish) but with this drive connected to the newer PC I get the same error message as with the internal drive.

Sounds like what I will do is keep this version of Photoshop and just buy the upgrade for a version of Photoshop that works with Windows 7 (64 bit) when it comes out.

Honestly, all of the new processors/MBs coming out are heading us more and more towards 64 bit. If anything Adobe and the rest of the software world needs to keep up with the hardware. 64 bit software when properly programmed works faster than 32 bit software. It took HP 1.5 years to put out drivers for one of its printers I have for XP 64. Incredible to think that HP would take that long to catch up to the hardware.

I have used XP 64 since 2005 and really like it. Dont want to upgrade to Vista 64 or downgrade to XP 32 at this point so Windows 7 64 bit sounds like how I will go.

All of the CS4 apps, as far as I can tell, run quite nicely on Windows
7. Its quite likely at this point that Windows 7 will be released before
CS5.

Thanks Bob for the heads up. I found this text about the release date of Win7:

Q. What is the expected timeline for the availability of Windows 7?

A. We are currently in the planning stages for Windows 7 and expect it will take approximately 3 years to develop. The specific release date will be determined once the company meets its quality bar for release.

Q. Has Windows 7 been released to manufacturing?

A. We’re continuing to work with our partners on the development of Windows 7, and are not sharing any additional information at this time.

Q. Is the schedule for Windows 7 being moved up due to poor Windows Vista sales?

A. We’re not sharing additional information on Windows 7 at this time. However, we’re confident that many organizations are recognizing the value in Windows Vista. Of note, sales of Windows Vista licenses have now passed 100 million. In addition, Windows Vista is being adopted by businesses at a rate that is similar to past releases. In the business market there are early, mainstream and late adopters, with the majority of businesses falling into the category of mainstream. We’re seeing positive indicators that we’re already starting to move from the early adoption phase into the mainstream, and that more and more businesses are beginning their planning and deployment of Windows Vista.

Doesn’t sound like Windows 7 will be out anytime soon. Thus I may decide to downgrade my older system once I have finished installing all of my programs to my new PC. Or perhaps get a dual-bootable system for my new one.

MS has learned not to promise anything. I’m running the beta here and it’s very polished. Read the non-MS reviews and you’ll see everyone predicting Win 7 anywhere from June to December of this year.

I’m so impressed with the beta that, barring something unforeseen, I plan to do something I’ve never done before…upgrade immediately.

Either back up to XP 32 or move up to Vista 64.

I’m not sure if he really thought this was a useful response. XP x64 is the only option if you need lots of memory and you’re in that huge group of users that finds Vista unusable.

File Access Denied

I’ve installed PS fine in XP x64. Are you installing it as an administrator? (I’m not sure if a "power user" account is sufficient.) Also, try copying the entire contents of the disc to the hard drive and run the installer from there. Leave the disc in the drive, though.

If that fails, and you know what you’re doing, you might be able to find out what’s actually failing by watching the installer process with Process Monitor ( http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.asp x).

the only thing i’m worrying about is the DRM issues i’ve been reading. i rip my dvds (all legal purchases) to hard drive because i got sick of re-buying them when the chillin’ scratch them up playing hockey with them on the floor. i hear 7 is supposed to be pretty strict about locking down content it even THINKS might be problematic.

To make a long story short – it did install on my older PC just fine but I never could get it to install correctly on the new one.

Same OS too.

Used the download from the Adobe site to install it on new PC and that seemed to work but then got a Ser# error later.

Copied DVD to old PC and that installed fine. But its not on new PC!

Vendor offered to send me updated version CS4 EXT but apparently that is what shipped on the DVD.

Returned product. Have Essentials 2.0 and with new large drive for scratch disk my problems are all over. Bought a 1.5 TB drive and dedicated 1 TB to Scratch Disk. That solved the problem. Along with 8 GB of RAM I am set to go.

Thanks to all that provided help.

Can’t say I’m killing myself testing it but yes, it seems very stable. The mere fact that it was fully installed in 18 minutes or so tells me this thing has been dramatically streamlined.

The interface has been tweaked instead of overhauled and from the little bit of CS4 testing I did, everything runs quite nicely.

Suppose that you must copy CS4 to C: drive before installation.I have successfully installed it on XPx64.

@thanh I suppose this couldn’t hurt; however this wasn’t necessary to install on my XPx64 workstation. Running just fine; only sore point is that I need to use 32bit for most 3rd party plugins.
