Hi there. I have one or two photos that have been lit with just one brolly flash and the left hand side is too dark in comparison th the right hand side. Can anyone suggest the best way to grade the brightness so that it is more even. I’ve tried overlaying another layer but can’t seem to get the hang of it. I guess it will be some sort of brightness/contrast modifying layer. I’d like to be able to adjust the effect as I watch the preview rather than having to try a mask, then change it and try again etc.

Thanks for any help.

Regards
Andrew.

the easiest way is probably to use an adjustment layer with a mask. this really shouldnt be too hard. just use guides to set exactly where the mask should start and where it should end. then create your mask, and if not correct, instead of trying again, try using free transform to adjust the span of the gradient, and use levels or curves to adjust the contrast of
the
mask. it may take some work but id say thatll be your best bet. but
perhaps
im wrong haha.

Quick Mask so that only the bits you want to alter show, leave quickmask and adjust the levels/curves so that only the selection changes. Probably no better than an adjustment layer, but at least i’m trying to be different… 🙂

Martin, thanks, nice try. I do want a gradual brightening across the whole frame though, a selection would give me a hard edge.

Cheers
Andrew.

You create the selection by using a big, soft airbrush in "quick mask", then return to normal mode. The unmasked area turns into a selection.
