Hey all,

Hoping and praying someone here will have a clue for me. I’ve been printing with my 2200 for 6 years now and it still gives a great print. But….

…. today for some very strange reason, the photo is printing "squashed" vertically. To clarify, if printing an uncropped 2×3 format image (what comes right out of my Canon DSLR), the print distorts the image by shortening the width! While this makes the subjects look tall and skinny this is NOT always desirable 🙂

In this case I had an animal subject where a key facial measurement was 3 1/2" wide by 2" long on the screen. This is correct visually to how the subject looks to the human eye. When the file is printed, the same area on the print measures 3" by 2", so it is effectively squeezing the image to be narrower than it really is.

I thought I saw this distortion on the last print I made several weeks ago but that image was not exactly photo realistic and was much more amenable to distortion, so it wasn’t so glaring. Today, it is definitely noticeable and a big problem.

I am using PS CS3 and in the CS3 print dialog box I have scaled the 28×40" image (to be done on a canvas) down to 20% to fit an 8.5×11 page in order to print a proof to send the canvas printer. In these settings, I also have the center image box checked. Photoshop manages color and I’ve selected the correct paper profile (previously downloaded from Epson) for my paper.

My Epson print settings are for Color Mgmt-ICM, No Color Adjustment and this problem shows up whether printed with or without these settings: minimize margin & high speed.

I’ve printed this scaled image a bunch of times and also tried to print one that was perfectly sized within CS3 to fit on an 8.5×11. I’ve also tried different papers, wondering if it might be a bad profile. All have come out distorted.

My next step is to go back and re-update the printer driver/dialog/settings box and see if that makes a difference. But I just updated it this summer without any problem so I’m not hopeful on that account.

Thanks for any ideas on how to deal with this. It’s further stupifying as one can wonder: is it the Epson or PS CS3? Who knows? I surely don’t.

All I can think of is that you have Pixel Aspect Ratio selected instead of square pixels. (Look under the view menu).
