Hi, had this problem and have spent all morning finding a solution. I found another thread on here that answered it, but I thought I’d share the solution again for anyone else with the same issue.

Problem is when importing an avi file into Photoshop CS3 (XP in my case, can’t see that it would make a difference), the file opens as a transparent or blank document. Video ran fine in Windows Media Player.

Photoshop uses Quicktime encoding, so test it in there first. If it doesn’t play, you need codecs. Download gspot (great little freeware program), it will tell you what codec you need. Google and hope for a Quicktime version of it. In my case, it was the EnSharpen codecs from Techsmith, <http://www.techsmith.com/download/codecs.asp>.

After doing that, the avi ran like a dream in Quicktime for me. However, when putting it into PS, it was still mostly transparent and missing a great deal of the movement.

This was solved by going to Layer > Video Layers > Interpret Footage. I chose Ignore under Alpha Channel, and voila, all perfect!

Hope that helps someone else with the same issue at some point. 🙂
