CS4 – Right click disabled. WHY???

In all of the previous versions of CS as well as Version 7 you could Right click anywhere on the top bar of a "floating" image and see options to do the following:

Duplicate
Image Size
Canvas Size
File Info
Page Setup

I cannot do the same thing in CS4. Why would they disable this option? Can we change it back to the way of the previous versions? If so how? Who do we complain to about this?

I am not a fan of the opening images into the window so all you see is the file number followed by the "X" so you have to go to "Window" then choose "Arrange" then chose either "Float in Window" or "Float all in Window". I like to be able to see all of my images and make a choice when viewing them as to which I am going to work with first. Can we make a permanent change to the way the program operates?

Thanks,

Al

Well, there is good news and bad news. Which do you want first? 🙂

I’ll start with the good news: You can turn off the "tabbed interface" by going to Edit>Preferences>Interface and removing the checkmark for "Open Documents as Tabs".

Now the bad news: The right-click on the title bar still won’t work.

Here are some additional thoughts and suggestions:

– Set up your own keyboard shortcuts for the features you previously used via the right-click/title bar (Image Size, for example).

– Give the tabbed interface a fair shot. You might find it grows on you. Here are some tips specifically related to that:

* You don’t have to use Window>Arrange. You can use the new "Arrange Documents" icon on the toolbar to go directly to "Float all windows" (it saves you one menu depth anyway). You can also assign your own keyboard shortcut for that as well.

* The Arrange Documents icon also gives you several other arrangement alternatives that you can select directly.

* If you are in tabbed mode and you want to float a particular image, all you need to do is grab the tab and pull it down into the workspace. If you want to move it back as a tabbed document, just grab the title bar and move the image to the top of the workspace until you see the blue line.

Dennis,

Thank you for the tips. I had already set up keyboard short cuts to take care of most of the things I want to do including the floating issue.

When I have to take my hand off of the mouse I lose productivity time. I like having keyboard shortcuts but I also like the right click options. The more they improve PS the more they screw it up. GRRRRR. Why don’t they ask the photographers who deal with hundreds of photos at a time what features they want to get rid of? It would save complaints.

I have learned to work with the tabs but I need the ability to select images based on orientation quite often. Tabs doesn’t work for this.

Thanks,

Al

Another thing you might want to try is using Adobe Configurator to create your own mini-panel with the commands you used to get by right-clicking the title bar. I just submitted one to Adobe Exchange but I don’t know if it will get accepted or not. It is my first time submitting something there. It was pretty easy if you want to try creating one yourself.

I don’t understand what you mean by "select images based on orientation". I am just curious. Could you explain?

Yes and they can ask the painters and retouchers and web designers and general photoshoppers at the same time.

Digital photography arrived pretty late on the Photoshop scene you know!

Having said that quite a few (including me) were annoyed by the new UI but we learned to live with it. I think on balance there are more good new features than annoying ones in CS4.

Adobe Configurator

Still a toy. With a configurator panel active, my machine is pegged at 50% cpu with Ps idle. Removing the panel, Ps idles at 5% cpu.

… select images based on orientation …

Bridge. Filter > Orientation

… missing right-click on the title bar …

Annoying for one day. Now I do not miss it. I use a Wacom pen so holding a pen and typing keyboard shortcuts are no big deal. The UI in CS4 (including tabbed documents) are (for me) an improvement over CS2.

Dennis,

I am a Professional Rodeo Cowboy’s Association (PRCA) photographer and when preparing photos for publication or printing for customers I often open several that are vertical and several that are horizontal at the same time. I don’t know what they are when I am selecting them, I just go by file numbers. When they are open I want to work with one orientation first because I am adding copyright information to the front of the image along with date and event information with specific locations for the information on the images. If I drag the information from a vertical to a vertical image, I don’t have to move the information since it copies to the same location. Yet if I move the information from vertical to a horizontal image, then I have to go in and re-locate the information to the correct location on the image as it copies to dead center on the image.

So for my work flow it is easier if I select the same orientation from all of the images that are open.

Hope that makes sense.

John,

Oh contrair, dear John. Digital photography has been around since 1991 in one form or another. It just wasn’t available to the masses in the form it is now. I know as early as 1994 my Pro Lab was digitally scanning my images from negatives to digital and doing the retouching that way. I had started "playing" with retouching in 1995-6 from some of the scans the lab provided to me.

My point was why not find out what people like as groups and then they could sell specific modifications to those groups. You know capitalism at it’s best. Rather than just going in and trying to force feed changes to everyone.

What pray tell is the UI? Is that the User Interface? Why does everyone feel the need to throw acronyms around instead of spelling the words out? Even if you use the word with an example like this just once then some of us ODG or ODP would understand what it means. Oh by the way ODG is (older dumber guys) and ODP is (older dumber people) as opposed to YCSDG which is (Younger Can’t Spell Dumber Guys). :>)

Thanks,

Al

I’m quite tempted to use a very rude acronym after that little lot!

I haven’t got the time or inclination though.

Josh,

I was trying to be funny not rude. Seems you didn’t take it that way. Sorry!
