I’m using PS4 Extended on Windows SP3 and whenever I double click on a JPEG, TIFF or PSD file, it will open Photoshop but the file itself does not open. I’ve checked to make sure PS4 is the chosen program to open with both in Properties as well as in File Types. Dragging and dropping a file into Photoshop will work.

Tried doing a search in Help and cannot find a solution to this problem.

Can anyone offer any help, please?

Your problem is that the actions for these file types are not setup correctly. This is an OS problem; it is no wonder that you can’t find anything about the subject in Help. Usually problems like this are handled by the installation process.

To look at the setup for the ones you mentioned, I had to logon as administrator. Then, I accessed the folder options tab in Windows Explorer. You will find a tab for File Types. Go down the list until you locate Jpg and press the "advanced tab". Report back what you see for the actions which are valid for this file type.

And, you will get more help in the newsgroup
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general.

Your DDE strings are referring to an older version of PS, most likely and go nowhere. I’d simply remove all associations and create them from scratch using right-click and "Open with". Also check for language conflicts. You may run your system in a language otehr than your Photoshop, which may also throw things off track.

Mylenium,

Thanks for your help. I reselected "Open with" and it worked for TIFF and PSD files, but not for the JPEG’s. (BTW, my system is using US English)

I tried selecting Quicktime and then changed it back to PS4 and now all the JPEG files use the Quicktime icon, opens PS4 when double clicked but the file still does not open in PS. I then went into Quicktime and I found that in the "File Types" tab, all image type files are checked off to be opened with QT. No matter how many times I deselect all the image file types in QT, it automatically reverts back to all being checked when QT is reopened.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I just tried removing Quicktime altogether, restarted my computer and made sure JPEG file type was re-set to open with PS4.

Same problem: PS4 opens but the file doesn’t.

make sure there’s a "%1" after the application name (photoshop.exe)…

Dave,

Tried what you and the link suggested and could not find that key. I even copy and pasted it into Find and nothing like HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\Photoshop.exe\shell\open\comm and\(Default).

Upon searching, the closest thing I could find was:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Applications\Photoshop.exe\Shell \Open\Command.

In that last folder under the Name column was (Default), under Type was "REG_SZ" and in Data was "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Photoshop.exe"

Is this the key I am to delete?

I don’t think you have to delete it. just edit it and add: "%1" (with the quotes) after a space… that should work. yes, that’s the key.

so the new line will be:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Photoshop.exe "%1"

or if the quotes are there in your registry:

"C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Photoshop.exe ‘%1’"

I modified the entry as you said and now when I double click on a JPEG I get a "Access Denied" warning. When I go to Open With, Photoshop does not appear, and when I browse in the Open With Window and select Photoshop CS4, it automatically reverts to Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

TIFF’s and PSD’s open fine.

Something very screwy here!

UPDATE:

I tried placing a space between the .exe and % and it appears to be working properly now.

Thank you all for your assistance.

Hope it continues to function properly. Seems kind of weird TIFF’s and PSD’s were okay but JPEG’s were a problem, doesn’t it?

fwiw deleting that key would probably allow you to fix it with tools> view> file types from explorer. not saying to try it, just saying… 😉
