CS2 Tiff files crashing my word processor

I recently upgraded my Photoshop 7 to Photoshop CS2. I’ve been saving 1 bit line art tiff files for years with Photoshop 7 and there has never been this issue. When I save 1 bit TIF files with CS2, it crashes my word processing software. I’m saving it with all the same settings I used to save them with from v7. Is there some setting I’m missing that can fix this problem? I’m saving my files with the following settings

1 bit 300 dpi
LZW compression
Pixel Order – Interleaved
Byte – IBM PC

With the exception of the ‘pixel order’ setting, all the other settings are exactly the same. v7 doesn’t appear to have that pixel order selection. I have tried many different combinations of these selections without success. I’m hoping someone here can point me in the right direction.

My word processor is Arbortext Epic Editor Version 4.1.

Did you install the dot release for CS2? (and how did you upgrade to something that old?)

I don’t recall any bugs or changes that could cause problems in 1 bit TIFF files. But my guess is that there is a bug in your word processor’s handling of TIFF.

The pixel order should have no effect on 1 bit/channel (and single channel) files.

Hi Chris. Thanks for responding.

I’m not with the I.T. department here at work. The reason I now have CS2 is because the version 7 disc somehow sprouted legs and walked away. (eyeroll) My computer required a reformat and because I wanted Photoshop reinstalled, the I.T. department installed a valid CS2 disc that was sitting on their shelf.

That being said, I’m certain that the bug really lies with BOTH my word processor AND Photoshop CS2. That’s why I was hoping someone here might be able to come up with a reason why one version of Photoshop WILL save a file that’s usable while another version won’t. If the newer version is saving some extra bit of information in the TIF file, what is it and can I possibly get rid of it somehow.

Alternatively, I would need to get my hands on Version 7 somehow. I shudder to upgrade to the lastest version of Photoshop since I worry the problem will still be an issue.

Or, if anyone knows a way to get a 1 bit TIF file out of Adobe Illustrator, that would work too (but I’m quite certain that’s impossible)

Without knowing the exact bug in the word processor – I don’t know. It could be any of a thousand minor differences (metadata, order of some data, padding, etc.) that shouldn’t matter, but do because of the specific bug in that exact version of that particular word processor.

So is it possible to purchase a previous release of Photoshop?

Or maybe get a replacement if I can produce a valid license?

Or am I basically out in the cold here?

I think your best bet is to contact the makers of your word processor and ask them about an update.

I would try Save as BMP instead of TIFF.

Chris: Updating the word processing software isn’t an option since it would require updating 50 licenses (the rest of the staff in the department) as opposed to my restoring my already valid license. Doesn’t seem fair (although it’s not my money).

Gernot: Our customer guidelines require a 300 dpi 1 bit tiff. Contractual obligation.

Thanks for your help. I’ll pass this information to the I.T. staff and see about contacting Adobe for a replacement disk.

Laurie,

some tests: CS2 Bitmap-Tiffs can be placed in all CS2
programs and they can be used in my (older) versions of
Word and Excel, furtheron in WordPad.

The complete settings: 300ppi, Halftone Screen 53 Lpi,
45°, Diamond.

Thanks again Garnet. As you can see above, the word processor software in question is Arbortext Epic Editor Version 4.1. The issue only seems to be with that program and nothing else.

Laurie – and yet the bug is in your word processing software. Installing a dot release of it shouldn’t require any licensing changes.

Chris. I’m not sure what a dot release is. If you’re referring to somehow updating the Epic software I’m referring to, then our IT department says that is not an option as that would have other adverse affects on our production procedures. I assume that means a similar issue to what I’m having here. (Epic update would conflict with something else). Not really my department though. Bottom line is, I need a fresh copy of Photoshop 7. My understanding is that the IT department is going to be getting one.

I know what you’re getting at there Dave. 😉 I don’t know where or how they’re getting it and right now, I just want to get on with my work. We have a valid license and paperwork to prove it. That should be good enough for anyone IMO.

It could also be the LZW compression

Laurie – a dot release is a bug fix release of software. 7.0 is the main version, and 7.0.1 is the first dot release update. Yes, you need to update your word processing software to fix the bug in the word processing software.

If your IT department can’t update software to pick up bug fixes, it seems like you have much larger problems than just TIFF files. (and they sound very Dilbert-esque)
