I have had CS installed and working fine on my machine for several years and I shoot strictly in raw (nef from a D80). All of a sudden a few days ago CS decided it did not want to open raw files any more, tiffs and jpgs still work fine. The first thing I tried was to download the latest raw plugin for CS and install it, still resulting in the same problem. I then proceeded to uninstall and reinstall CS in a few different ways, but to no avail. I also tried opening a raw file from my backup drive with the same results. The specific error message is "could not complete your request because of a disk error," which doesn’t mean much to me but I am getting the idea that it is a problem with my machine and not the CS software itself.

I am desperate for any ideas/suggestions/help; since I only shoot in raw and my CS isn’t working with that format I am virtually crippled and my CS is worthless to me.

Help?

Joshua,

Have you tried to reinstall the Camera Raw plug-in? The latest for CS, that is?

What version of Camera Raw do you have? (Help > Plug-ins)

Is it still the D80 camera?

Thanks for the reply Rob,

Yes, I did install the latest raw plug-in for CS. I think it was v2.4. And yes, the files are still coming from the D80. Someone else suggested my HDD may be corrupt and I think that is possible. I am still open to more suggestions to see if it is just CS (which I hope it is and not my machine going bad)

Joshua,

Are you really, really sure you were previously able to open D80 RAW files?

I don’t want to doubt you but the v2.4 readme does NOT indicate compatibility with the D80.

Joshua,

Have you tried using Nikon’s ViewNX to look at your nef files? That may help in finding out what is causing your problems. Also, if ViewNX works at least you will be able to look at your images and convert to tiffs to open in Photoshop.

ViewNX is a free download from Nikon web site. I installed the latest version (1.2.2) this week and find it’s a lot better than older versions.

Geoff.

Haha, yes Dennis, I am sure I have been opening/editing raw files from my D80 for the past year. Or… have I? That would be something if I was imagining it the whole time. *checks self into metal hospital* 🙂

Joshua – As I said I really didn’t want to question your memory but here’s the thing:

– The first ACR update to support (officially anyway) the D80 was v3.6 as part of CS2.

– The D80 was not even announced until August of 2006. The last update of any kind available for CS was January of 2005.

Now either you have been taking advantage of a very lucky quirk all this time or something else is going on.

Nikon used to produce a raw plug-in for Photoshop didn’t they? Is it possible that that is what you were using and what you perhaps lost or de-installed during your changes?

——> RESOLVED!!!!! 🙂 who’d thunk it, but reinstalling Picture Project fixed the issue with CS. I reinstalled it on a whim to see if it would help, and now that it did, I have noticed while opening files in CS, in the status/progress bar at the bottom of the CS window it says "reading Nikon NEF PP format." Apparently the "PP"=Picture Project, weird. I decided to try it after Geoff suggested ViewNX as part of a solution and I realized I uninstalled ViewNX from my machine recently; and after Dennis suggested Nikon made a plugin (I assumed only Adobe made the plugins for PS) it made sense that it would be some Nikon software I uninstalled that "broke" CS.

I thank everyone that took time to respond (no thanks to Adobe Tech support or customer service) 🙂 🙂 🙂
