Can someone visit this site and tell me (generally) how this picture was done? <http://www.adecco.com/Channels/adecco/home/home1.asp>

I know that it is not as simple as making the picture black and white. Please help!!!

Thanks,

It looks like it’s just desaturated with (possibly) some layer masking. Is it the "watermark" look you’re after? That’s as simple as turning down your opacity or applying a layer mask in a low opacity. The edge fade also can be done with LM. Really there are a million ways to do this, what, specifically, are you looking for?

You can acheive these results from applying a Levels or Curves adjustment layer also…really there are many many ways.

Emma,
Thanks. I have just played with some of your suggestions and am nearly achieving that look.

Thanks.

Image -> Adjust -> Desaturate.

Image -> Adjust Levels.
Change output levels to about 160 / 255.

There are multiple ways of doing this. Everything from desaturating an image over a white background and changing the blend mode or opacity to converting to grayscale and changing the brightness and contrast. The above should give you the look you are after with relative ease.

Edit:

Oops, Guess I missed Emma’s post. Looks like you already had things under control.

Yours was more explicit, though, Photo.

Thanks. You are too kind. I forgot to mention the edge fade alltogether.

That is a great technique that I’ve seen posted a long long time ago at dprieview. It is time consuming to learn though, but you can go by the continueing threads for hints and tips. –You need extensive use of the dodge/burn tools, USM and History.

Do a search and find the free download of "Digital Dan’s" channel Mixer presets first.

The beginning of it all lies with a thread that used to be found at: < http://www.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1006&messa ge=3842725>

If you can’t find it there, all the information was started by a "Lisa Neal" and most of the threads show high key sketches of babies.

The easiest image is a very fair complected baby with absolutely no hair. Or I suppose an old bald Swede would do as well? LOL
