I just installed CS4 on Monday. I’ve been working with Photoshop 7. I work in a theatre and create a lot of vertical images — posters, brochures, etc. They all appear square when I open them.

In the View menu, there is not a checkmark next to Pixel Aspect Ratio, and Pixel Aspect Ratio Correction is grayed out.

Under Pixel Aspect Ratio, Square is checked, but I am not able to uncheck it without selecting something else.

Under Advanced, the Pixel Aspect Ratio is set to Square Pixels.

Per the moderator at the Adobe Help forum, I tried deleting the preference files by holding Ctrl+Alt+Shift just after starting Photoshop. No change.

Here are screen shots of my View settings and my image size menu.

I’m a total newby at this CS4 software. Please help if you can!

The Pixel aspect ratio should be left on Square, the other settings are mainly for viewing stills from video clips. There is no need for you to change this.
You say that your posters look square but the screen grabs do not show this. What software have you made the posters in?

Is your monitor on its native resolution?

Check your hardware acceleration options in the performance section of the prefs. Turn off hardware accel. Quite possible, that it distorts the texture buffer due to a misconfiguration in your graphics card’s driver. In the medium run, rectify it by experimenting with the driver settings. and of course follow the others’ advise….

Auriette, I’ve looked at your screen grabs in PS on my computer, your canvas size is the correct proportion (17.5 x 22) on my screen. I can only conclude from this that your screen resolution is wrong and is stretching the image horizontally. As John said, is it on the native resolution?

Yep, you pegged it. The monitor resolution was wrong.
I would’ve thought the IT guy would have made any changes when he set-up the system, but apparently not.

Thanks for all your help!
