Gray becomes tan

Hi,

I just got my new PC (with a GeForce285 on Vista) and I installed Photoshop CS4. Now my problem is that the gray is not gray. If I fill a rectangle with a basic gray (128,128,128), it paints it with a "tan" color. When I "Save for Web & Devices" for example, the "preview" image is showed with the correct gray. I also "uninstall" CS4 and tried it with CS3 and it produces the same problem. The R,G,B colors seems to produce the correct colors and the B&W are perfect too… Someone has an idea?

Thanks in advance!
Patrice

Likely a corrupt monitor profile.

Thanks, and how do I fix that?

Calibrate the monitor. There are eyeball methods or, more reliable, the use of a hardware device like the Eye One.

Google "monitor calibration" to see more information than can be typed here.

Ok, I have done that. No difference unfortunately. I think my problem is related with Photoshop (same in CS3 and CS4)? Everywhere else (other applications), the grays are perfect.

It’s "tan" only in Photoshop (same problem in Illustrator).

Look here for comparison:
(tan in PS)

(gray when I "save as" the same image)

Thanks,

Right click on the desktop, select Personalize, click Display Settings, click Advanced Settings, select the Color Management tab, click Color Management. Make sure your monitor is selected in the Device list(it should be by default), deselect Use my settings for this device(if it isn’t). Go to the Advanced tab and make sure the Device profile is set to sRGB IEC 61966-2.1 and Viewing conditions profile to WCS profile for sRGB viewing conditions.

It’s not the ideal setup but if you don’t have a color calibration device it should be good enough(and it also should display grays as gray)

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, it was already set like you suggested.

then try looking in the color management dialog again, but this time in the All Profiles tab and check to see what filename is associated with sRGB(it should be sRGB Color Space Profile.icm) and also check to see if there’s any reference to your monitor in there(like a filename that’s called something like your monitors manufacturer).

Thanks. Yes, sRGB is set to the right file. I also find a file associated with my monitor (Dell 2208WFP).

In the "Devices" tab (in the color management dialog), the ICC Profiles list contains only one profile that is defaulted to my Dell file. Should I remove it and add the sRGB instead?

just remove it, that should be enough(maybe a restart of the pc if it doesn’t help)
