I use 3 monitors, my main monitor is hooked up to a 8800gtx and the other two are hooked up to a 9800gt. In the GPU settings, I only see the 9800gt. Before I added the 2nd gpu, Photoshop performed better (it rightly showed the 8800gtx in the settings). Is there a way to set it back to the 8800gtx.

Thanks

Move the cards in the correct PCIx slots. Device enumeration has nothing to do with Photoshop, it’s merely an operating system thing and it is the one that decides, which device is the primary one based on it’s internal device and port IDs.

Many thanks for answering.
Obviously, the better card (8800gtx) is in the 16x slot, the main monitor is connected (alone) to it and defined in Windows as the primary monitor. Monitor 2 & 3 are on the 9800 which is in the 4x slot and defined as secondary displays. Photoshop is started and maximized on the main monitor, but still shows the 9800 in the settings. Where do I go wrong? I dont want to put the faster card and bigger monitor in the slower pci slot?

Cheers

maybe some settings in the drivers, but i can’t help you there, last time i saw nvidia drivers was back in version 45. Do note however that while the 8800gtx is better than the 9800gt, the difference is very very small, there’s no way that you’d notice the difference between them in photoshop(though that would be if the 9800gt would be in a 16x slot)

One possible solution would be to remove your 8800gtx, start your computer so that it realizes that you only have the 9800gt and then shut it down and plug the card back in

Try what Zeno said. Basically your problem is, that your registry is now "polluted" with incorrect data regarding the graphics card settings and it may resort to that old info, even if you swap things around. Usually you would completely re-install the OS, but it may be possible by creating a state where the system is forced to update all hardware info by only running with one card, then plugging back the other.

if starting without that card doesn’t work (it should) check the bios too. some will allow you to assign the primary and secondary cards manually. (even though one is pci16 and the other is the older pci 8 )

Tried the pull card out – put back in suggestion, without success. Couldnt find anything in the bios also. Anyway, my main app (Max) recognizes the right gpu so I’ll stick to that till I upgrade to Win7…

@Zeno
You’re most probably right about the performance difference in Photoshop, but I gain precious fps in Max’s viewport with the 8800, not anything whopping but still.

I really appreciate you guys taking the times to help me out. Many thanks again

Cheers
