CS4 Design Premium, PS CS4 Extended v.11.0.1, Win XP Pro SP3 OS

I am working on an image that is 7.097" wide by 9.931" high at 240 ppi. I need to crop the image and resize it to 72 dpi for web viewing.

I select the crop tool, enter "120 px" into the Width box, "142 px" into the Height box, and "72 pixels/inch" into the Resolution box.

However, when I attempt to use the crop tool on the image, the crop box boundaries are limitless! I also tried resizing the image to 72 ppi first, but the tool still doesn’t hold the dimensions I provide.

Has there been a change in how this tool works in CS4? What am I missing?

Thanks! All enlightenment appreciated!

The crop tool will resize whatever limitless bounds you throw at it to 120 x 142 @ 72 ppi. You’ll notice it stays at the 120:142 ratio at all times.

If you are absolutely sure you are typing the dimensions in correctly and it still does it, try resetting the tool from the drop down menu in the presets panel top left.

(Forget the resolution box.)

J – No, those dimensions remain in the boxes at the top of the screen, but I can assure you that I can make that crop box any size and dimension I dern well please so even the ratio is meaningless.

John – I even resorted to spelling out "pixels" in both the width and height boxes and allowed PS to change it to the standard "px" abbreviation to be sure. I’ll try resetting the tool and let you know how it works.

John – OK, I reset the tool from the drop down menu. Now, the ratio that J referred to earlier DOES hold, but the box can still be drug out to any size.

Previous to this, I’ve always been able to set the dimensions, click and drag and it limits the crop box to the exact size I specified. I could move the crop box around after it was set, but I could not resize it without changing the dimension settings and re-dragging the box.

The crop tool always works like that, even though you enter precise values you can still make the selection as small/big as you like however once you accept the crop it will be the size you specified.

You could try using the Marquee tool, set Style to Fixed Size, enter the values you want and select the area you want to crop(this time it will remain the size you want it to be) and go to Image->Crop.

PPI matters only when printing, low PPI won’t give you smaller files
