I recently bought a Viao Z550N laptop with 3Gb RAM, XP SP3. In preferences I have selected 75% usage. However, PS 7 sees only 1777 Mb. How can I convince PS that there’s an extra Gig in there?

You are confusing physical memory with virtual memory.
Your system has 3GB of physical RAM. Windows will use all of that which remains after the various controllers have taken their bite. 32 bit operating systems, such as Windows, provide 4 GB of virtual address space. However, Windows must be mapped into this 4 GB; for convenience of programming, user programs can never access more than 2 GB of virtual address space.
PS will tell you that it can access on 1777 MB of virtual address space; the rest is reserved for other programs.
It is correct that the Intel /PAE instructions overcome these limitations, but Windows XP ignores the /PAE switch.
Hence, your system will never provide more than 1777 MB of virtual address space no matter how much RAM you have.
What you gain from having so much RAM is that the system will access the pagefile much less.
