PS CS Takes Five Minutes To Load

This is odd. I haven’t added or changed any plug ins or filters from PS 7, but when I start up PS CS, it takes five minutes or longer to load when it gets to loading plugins. I’ve actually timed it, and it happens every time. On PS 7 it takes less than a minute. I called Tech Support and they said it is a problem with a plug in compatibility??? All the plugins work, once they are finally loaded. I do have a lot of plugins, but it doesn’t seem logical that it would take five times longer to load on PS CS than they do in PS 7.

Does anyone have this problem or know what might be wrong?

Thanks,
Sweet-P

Sounds precisely like what support said: plugin problem. The code for CS has changed considerably; an uncompatibility shouldn’t be a surprise.

The only way to debug it would be to remove one at a time and check your load time, then when you figure out which one it is, see if they have an update, if no report the problem and decide if the plugin is worth keeping before it’s fixed.

Sheesh…I took three hours trying to figure out which one or ones might be the problem…and it just happens to be Photographic Edges 6.0!!! These are my favorite plugins…can’t survive without em! I don’t know if anyone else is having this problem or not. Hopefully, AutoFX will come out with a fix. I guess I will just have to wait the five to six minutes for them to load ‘coz I am not going to remove them.

You know I have a feeling that part of the problem is that PS CS lists all the plugins in the Keyboard Shortcuts, and I think it may be taking extra long to list them since that wasn’t a feature in PS 7. I might be wrong, but it’s just a gut feeling.

I feel your pain, having done something similar many times. I also thank you for sharing the experience so I won’t have to go through it. ;-}

If commiserating helps, I just paid $200USD for a plugin for a page layout app that worked fine in demo mode but is completely retarded now that I’ve given them my money.

These are my favorite plugins…can’t survive without em!

Well, there is something similar from both Extensis and Humansoft if you don’t want to wait. Both are faster, and the interface, to me at least, is more palatable than anything from Auto/FX.

Possible, but I’ve got a feeling Auto/FX is probably not following the developer’s rules as closely as they should. I wonder if Mr. Cox is listening in or if he’s too swamped with other bug reports right now.

The problem is Photographic Edges installs 15,000 files and a great many folders. Photoshop has to scan all of them to find and scan for plug-ins. Extensis is aware of the issue. The solution would be for the plug-in to install and look for its file in a location not located inside the plug-ins folder, but the current version of Photographic Edges requires its files and folders be located in the plug-ins folder to work.

Limiting the installed files to only those you expect to use will get Photoshop’s startup time back to where it was before the plug-in was installed.

That makes all kinds of sense. Thanks, Marc.

Extensis is aware of the issue.

One small correction: Auto/FX makes Photographic Edges. Hopefully they are aware of the issue. Extensis makes Photoframe – which only installs a little over 300 files.

Yes, I had just found that out. I tried to move the Content folder of PGE outside of PS CS Plugins, and sure enough when I started PS CS, it still took 6 minutes. I checked in the Plugins folder of PS CS and it replicated all the files that I had moved outside of the plugins folder!! I hope AutoFX does something about this…I depend on their plugins but don’t like having to wait 6 minutes for PS to load.

If he has lots of plugins, the way to do it is to remove HALF of the plugins. If that doesn’t fix the problem, remove HALF of those remaining and so on. If it does fix the problem replace half of those removed and so on.

That’s about the quickest way to isolate the problem plugin. Of course it takes time….

My mistake – Photographic Edges is from Auto F/X, -not- Extensis.

In my limited experience with it so far, CS loads somewhat faster than verison 7. I have the same (fairly short) set of plugins from V7 to CS for the test.
