There is a Painter8 forum at It is fairly active and they respond quickly. There should be someone there that knows if Painter 8 will run properly if at all on win98.

Thank you both for responding. Bob, I’ll check out that website when I have more time and Ho, since I have all the other requirements and then some, I’m kind of tempted to try it when it comes and give it a shot and if it doesn’t work, hopefully I’ll be getting a new computer one of these days so I’ll just keep it ’till then. We’ll see.

I have Painter 8 on Win98SE and it runs fine for me. When you install it you do get a warning dialog about your operating system, but I just OK’ed the dialog and proceeded with the installation.

WinXP has support for monitoring memory leaks while Win98SE has no such support. Developers on a tight schedule realize that this is a dangerous vulnerability for them and that may have played into Corel’s decision not to support Win98SE. Of course Microsoft themselves no longer support Win98SE so that reduces the motivation for other companies to do so. So the result is that you and Corel can’t know that Painter 8 doesn’t have memory leaks on Win98SE. That means you shouldn’t leave Painter 8 running for long times in the background. And you probably should reboot your computer at least on a daily basis to recover whatever memory may have "leaked" during your previous Painter 8 sessions.

I am also using Painter 8 on an AMD system, which is a double "no-no" and I got a warning (which I also ignored) about that during the Painter 8 installation. I don’t know what the possible negative consequences are of running P8 on AMD. I haven’t seen any.

I usually don’t run Painter 8 and Photoshop at the same time, although there have been times when I did, with no obvious bad effects. Not all of Photoshop’s PSD file features will "round trip" with Painter 8, although most of the basic ones will. You can put a shortcut in Painter 8’s Plugins folder to Photoshop’s Plug-Ins folder and voila! Most of Photoshop’s filters and plug-ins become available as effects in Painter 8. I was particularly delighted to apply Photoshop’s Cutout plug-in to a video clip using that technique. The combined capabilities of Painter 8 and Photoshop are awesome.

As an aside "off topic" comment, I have found Painter 8’s video capabilities to be very useful. I don’t have Premiere or After Effects, so I can’t bring my video into Photoshop as Filmstrip files (FLM) but I can bring my video into Painter 8 as an uncompressed AVI file where it is converted to a FrameStack (FRM) file, very similar to FLM in Photoshop in that it is just a sequence of bitmap images.

In Painter 8 it turns out to be very easy to develop a special effect while experimenting with one frame and then apply that captured script to the entire video clip. (An elaborate effect can take quite a bit of time to render.) Then after you have done all sorts of marvelous things to your video clip you can "Save As" it back to an AVI file for incorporation in your video editor. (I use Sony’s Sonic Foundry Vegas 4.) You can also save the FrameStack as QuickTime or Animated GIF or as a numbered sequence of bitmap images.

I am delighted by the ability to work on video in Painter 8 including access to Photoshop’s filters as well as Painter’s artistic talents. You do lose the audio in this "round trip" through Painter 8, so you should save your audio separately. Oddly, Corel makes very little mention of video in their marketing of Painter. But there is a whole section on it in the Painter 8 manual. I dunno…

Burton, I’m going to give it a shot when it comes sometime next week. Because of the memory leaks I rarely run more than program at a time anyway. I’m not into video at this time but I’m sure other users will welcome your comments. I’ll let you know how I make out. Thanks.

Hooray!!! Painter 8 came yesterday and it seems to work wonderfully so far. Thank you all for your input. For anyone else on 98SE, I do have 384MB of ram installed, Pentium 3, 600MHz so aside from the OS, I exceed the minimum requirements.
