If you check the box "Always Maintain Compatibility for Photoshop (PSD) files under Edit>Preferences>File Handling" you should understand what you are paying for in relation to what you are getting.

If you never export PSD files, you get zilch.

If you rarely export PSD files, you can make them compatible before exporting without arranging that compality in advance.

If the PSD files are layered there is likely to be a huge increase in the file size by saving with this caveat. I have many files which about double in size. For example—and this is typical for me—here’s a file that goes from 19.1 MB to 36.9 MB. Disk space is squandered but, just as important, file loading and manipulation are encumbered.

Therefore, it seems to me, all users but those who routinely import PSD files to other applications, the above-cited checkbox ought to be left unchecked. At the very least, users should be aware of what they are forfeiting. I had not previosly been so aware. The box was somehow checked and I was oblivious to the consequences.

George,

Just so I understand what you are saying, please define your use of the word "export"

Tony,

Placing Photoshop images in other applications. Not necessarily an explicit "export" from PS. Importing PSD files from or opening PSD files in another application.

Ah, gotcha. Frankly, I am not surprised that there would be a file size tradeoff for full backward compatability.

It’s fair to say though, as I’m sure you are aware, there are a few reasons why one SHOULD have the box checked.

In a recent thread, someone got a PSD from a Mac user and couldn’t open it. Turns out that when the Mac person checked that box, the PC guy could open it.

Also, if you’re sharing files with someone, it just seems safer to have the box checked, and you never have to worry about what version of PS they’re running. I recently sent files to an idiot printer who wanted both the Tiff and PSD version. I didn’t want to have them give me one of those idiot calls that went "you did something wrong". So, it’s one less thing to have as an issue.

I’m sure you know this, I was just enunciating it.

Tony,

Yes, and thanks for stating the case FOR checking the box. Which option is better depends on your usage pattern. (Surprise! Surprise! That’s why you’re given a choice {-:))
