I have two .psd images with clear backgrounds that I would like to merge into a single image with a clear background.

I was able to do it once, but I can’t recall how. When I merge the two files, they end up with a solid white background.

I even saved the two .psd files as .gifs (also with clear backgrounds), but they also end up with a solid white background after merging.

Can someone straighten me out on how to do this please?

Thanks!

Open both images in photoshop.

Drag the image from one to the other.

If you wish to retain the exact position of the one you are dragging, hold down the Shift key as you drag.

When you open as a GIF file, you should change [Image] -> Mode -> RGB

(Versions of photoshop earlier than CS also have a Help item that will guide you through saving as transparent GIF.)

Just drag one image on top of the other. You’ll get two layers, with a clear background. Now the important thing is that you should NOT flatten the image to get one layer, because thag will indeed give you a solid white background. Instead, select the top layer and use ‘Merge Down’. Finally, save as PSD again, not as GIF.
