I am upgrading PS 6 to PS CS. I am the administrator for XP on this PC. Compaq P4 with one gig RAM. Plenty of hard drive space. The install fails almost immediately (two bars on the progress meter) and I get the following message:
———————————–
Error Code: -5003 : 0x5
Error Information:
SetupDLL\SetupDLL.cpp (1889)
PAPP:Adobe Photoshop CS and ImageReady CS
PVENDOR:Adobe (http://www.adobe.com)
PGUID:EFB21DE7-8C19-4A88-BB28-A766E16493BC
$7.1.100.1248
@Windows XP Service Pack 1 (2600) IE 6.0.2800.1106
——————————————-
I contacted Adobe support and they spent over one hour having me doing things like:
clearing the temp folder
stopping services
starting up in safe mode
creating a new user with admin priv
copying the photoshop folder from the install disk to my hard drive
and running setup from there

each time we tried the install again and got exactly the same error. So I tried the PS CS disk on another computer and the install completed without a hitch.
Then I tried it on my laptop; again without any problems. So there seems to be nothing wrong with the disks.
At this point, the Adobe rep said "it appears to be a unique problem with this computer, I’m sorry , there is nothing more I know how to try."
I have not had any problems installing anything else, and I am completely current with all Windows XP updates. I am also virus free, at least as far as Norton tells me.
I went to the Adobe site and downloaded the ‘Tryout Version’ of Photoshop CS and tried to install it: I got exactly the same error! I am looking for a clue as to what could going on with this box that seems to bug Photoshop CS; my photoshop 6 works fine.

Are you running and Raid or SCSI drives? If you are running standard IDE drives, you might want to try a new Windows XP install. Windows does some wierd things with certain Apps sometimes. I am MS Beta Tester for about 5 years and computer repairman for 12+ years. I have seen some wierd things with Windows.

Silly question I know, but did you make sure Norton was disabled (along with all other running programmes) before trying your install??

Also which version of Norton are you running, the newer ones 2003/4 seem to cause more problems than they are supposed to fix.

As an aside, I tried to upgrade a Norton 2002 AV to Norton 2004. After having reinstalled XP from scratch I know run AVG. 😉

The C: drive on this system is SCSI. Would that be a problem, or has that caused problems in your experience?

hmmm – no guarantees offered a- a keyword may be Norton

It really does a grand job and sometimes it may be very keen.

Try:
1 – do not autoinstall stop it when it tries

2 – scan the installation disk with Norton

3 – once that has finished disable Norton and start the installation process

4 – keep an eye on Norton icon in the system tray – if it auto enables, then disable as soon as you can

obs: have you updated Norton at all?

I think what may be happening is that Norton checks the installation but a bit of phasing happens. The phasing is sufficient to terminate the installation

If that does not work and you are at the end of your tether resist every temptation to lob the disk(s) at a nearby wall. I am willing to buy 🙂 PSCS or CS suite?

good luck and let me know how you get on
