Not for nothin, but what is the public’s fascination with Hunter S. Thompson? People flock around this drunk old sot just like the drunk idiot in high-school was considered to be Mr. Popular. I’ve seen him on Leno, O’Brien, etc, and he has nothing interesting to say. "Look at me, I’m wasted, and I even brought out my drink for everyone to see." Even movies about this alky aren’t interesting. Ok, the guy is drunk, he’s high, and?????????????? I’m willing to keep an open mind, so MB, tell me what he writes is so interesting.
Think about it…..rarely does a writer appear "interesting" when interviewed on a television show. Besides, I don’t think you’re the type of person who would "get" Thompson’s work.
Instead of giving you my opinion on him and why he’s a great writer, let me list a few of the comments about his latest book –
"Thompson should be recognized for contributing some of the clearest, most bracing, and fearless analysis of the possibilities and failures of American Democracy in the past century."
-Chicago Tribune
"Thompson’s voice still jumps right off the page, as wild, vital and gonzo as ever."
-The Washington Post
"Thompson is a spirited, witty, observant, and original writer."
-The New York Times
If you’re really interested in what he’s all about, read his book called "Hell’s Angels". It’s about a year he spent hanging out with the Hell’s Angels and the political and cultural climate of the time. If you are going to "get" any of his books, it would be this one.
