History Pallet

My history pallet seems to be behaving strangely, or perhaps it’s ok and I am using it differently.

Yesterday, I had a number of items in history, starting with a file size change, GS to RGB, and a series of adjustments from the new PK sharpener. I decided to eliminate one of the adjustments by dragging it to Trash in the History Pallet. I inadvertently picked the history state immediately above the one I wanted, and lost the entire history except for the last entry, which should have disappeared. Further, no change to the image occurred and in checking Layers, everything was still there. Without realizing the implications, I dragged the unwanted Layer to trash in the Layers pallet, and proceeded on. Later, when I checked History, I realized what I had done. I could not go back to the starting point, and was now locked into the new, smaller size. Damn!!(I do have a backup, but not so well evolved)

So, I exited everything, and started an investigation, using simple Layer adjustments to set it up. Lets say you have 5 layers. Going to the second from the last entry in History, pulling it down to Trash eliminated everything in History except the last entry. However, no change in the image occurs, and all 5 layers are still accounted for in the Layer Pallet. Going Ctrl Z restores everything, a move I wish I had made in my real file.

I don’t think this is normal. I have in the past decided that a series of moves, say cloning, was wrong, and I regularly find the starting point and drag the whole set to trash. No problem. I do not have non-linear selected, but if I do, this behavior partially disappears. I have all the preceding layers, but no change occurs in the image. All layers still there.

I have tried the usual, reset prefs, and I have moved the last two plug-ins out of the Photoshop 6 folder. No change. Perhaps I need to completely uninstall them.

This is rather long, but it is as short as I can make it.

Summary:
Five items in Layers, and five items in History
Drag item four and five to trash by clicking on item four in History Lose all history except item Five
Do not lose any layer, and do not see the image change.

Any comments?

All I can say, is I’ve seen that, and don’t understand it. The only way I delete history items any more is click on the item to be deleted, and click the trash can. Then, my item and all items beneath it will be deleted. This is, of course, withOUT non-linear history option toggled on.

Long winded way to agree and say I don’t get it either.

Thanks. So, it’s "normal". Perhaps my usual use in the cloning operation behaves differently. At least I don’t have to re-install PS.

A follow-up.

If you click and hold, dragging to the Trash, you wind up with what I described. Notice no change in the image when you click and hold. If you click and release, now everything behaves as you want. Re-clicking on that state and dragging deletes that state and all below, as you would expect. If you double click and hold and drag, nothing happens at all. No drag, no change of any sort. Re-clicking and holding (after a double click) also removes history states but now, instead of one remaining state, you have two. (I haven’t tried triple clicking yet!)

Finally, once you click and release on any history state, you can click and drag anywhere without losing anything other that that state and below. Some sort of lockup going on here.

I certainly hope this isn’t a dialog between you and I, Tony! 😉

I’m exhausted!

Note: I am on PS 6.01

Sadly, I think it is, but at least I can verify that I see the same behavior. The history pallet has remained a mystery to me, so one day, when I get time, I might play. Until then, I use it like Word’s Undo <shrug>.
