I am having a discussion in another newsgroup about this pic:

I think it is fake. What do you think?

Why would you think that?

Checking with the web site noted in the image, and the source of your image, it seems pretty legit to me.

Of course you might be doing one of three things, asking a sincere question, trolling the group to provoke a pointless debate, or spamming the group to promote www.ultimatemotocycling.

I am asking a sincere question.

Seems to me as if the surf in front of the motorcycle is a patch. Here is what I think is the outline of the patch (yellow line):

http://coolhaus.de/misc/this-pic-is-doctored.jpg

The surf is an almost straight line, in reality it should align better with the shape of the pannier, the vehicle frame, the driver’s knee.

The wet parts of the vehicle body (red line) are just a few inches above the water line. In a strong current like this, I’d expect more of the vehicle to be wet.

And the driver’s knee is entirely dry, I thought that was unlikely.

Mainly because of the water flowing from under the front wheel well, I think it’s legit.

I thought it was real because of the wet higher up on the motorcycle. I’ve had people send me pictures and ask what I thought, too.

I googled it (the image) and found a page of links. Didn’t go over them to see what people were saying, or possible info about the actual picture. It looks like there are other pictures (not in the water) of the same setting. _

If it is not faked, then it is the moment before the motorcycle completely fails because the carburetors (or fuel injectors) are under-water and dysfunctional. Another hint is the borderline of the water and earth which defies depth-of-field.

It is either a fake or a picture of the motorcyclist about to bail out

If it’s real it probably wouldn’t be very good for the motorccycle LOL

This too is flawed reasoning, because there would be a moment at which the water had splashed to what you see, why could the snap have not been taken at that point?

I thought the bike was just sitting still in the water, having been ridden or pushed in till it died and came to a stop. Also, where is the person taking the picture- out on the water in a boat?

So deeply immersed in Water, a bike can move only very slowly. The surf appears not to be caused by the bike’s movement, but by the current coming from the left. Therefore, the surf should align closely with the pannier, the driver’s knee and especially with the gap between these two. Instead, it stands there like a wall.

Interesting topic for discussion, overall. So much now is doctored, there’s even a word for it now (outside of graphic design/art) "photoshopped". (well I’m sure everyone here knows this.)

I’m surprised there isn’t a law passed now saying anything that is changed or "photoshopped" has to be marked that. Though it could also be seen as "artistic license". Inhancing and changing- creating pictures is a form of art.

If the bike is moving forward, your expectation that the surf would not appear roughly as a straight line perp to the ‘film’ plane is unreliable

So deeply immersed in Water, a bike can move only very slowly. The surf appears not to be caused by the bike’s movement, but by the current coming
from the left. Therefore, the surf should align closely with the pannier,
the driver’s knee and especially with the gap between these two. Instead,
it stands there like a wall.

I’m surprised there isn’t a law passed now saying anything that is changed
or "photoshopped" has to be marked that. Though it could also be seen as "artistic license". Inhancing and changing- creating pictures is a form of
art.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/236808/julia_roberts_ad_banne d_in_the_uk_for_abuse_of_photoshop.html

The L’Oreal TV ads in this country (for hair color, too) are "unreal". Of course, the lighting, and such might also help. For one thing, they show a model (or known actress) with long, thick hair, suppoosedly colored with L’Oreal hair color. When one box of hair color is about enough for hair that might be shoulder length. A person would have to buy 2 boxes to color the long thick hair like they show. But I don’t think it says this on the commercials.
At one time, the person in the commercial supposedly had to actually use the product they were showing. I wonder if some of these famous celebrities (with the long thick hair) actually colored it (themselves) with one box of L’Oreal.
Not really the topic (Photoshop) but related.

I wonder how many people have stopped writing here, or asking questions (about Photoshop) because of getting put down by others? Not just those who seem to be here to do that (and somehow feel better about themselves by doing it) But, those who like to make out they know more about the topic and anyone who asks a question is dumb.
I used to go on a tech support group that said up top "there are no dumb questions, just some are easier to answer than others" (something like that) I remember when I was first learning how to make webpages, I’d ask questions no one could answer because they were so dumb (LOL) Like "where is page 2?" But, when someone is new and doesn’t k now (or even old and comes across something they don’t know) it’s hard to even explain. And sometimes the answer is right there.

Of course, this is a good/legitmate point, but this (we are participating on) is an unmoderated newsgroup. There’s not really anything anyone can do. If you read on Google groups you can report abuse, but as far as I know, nothing is every done. The ISP can be contacted (if they don’t use an anonymous one, as some who like to act up, do) but even IF the ISP cancels their account they can set up another one. They are paying for it and it’s business.
In a setting like this, ultimately we have to monitor ourselves, and focus on what we want here (talking/learning about Photoshop) and ignore everything else. Not get sidetraked by it.
Also, if you have the option, block the person and not even see it. We can’t always get rid of people (or get away from them, or get them to shut up) in "offline" life, and really can’t, here.

I think it’s a toss up. It could be totally fabricated, or not. If not, it’s probably enhanced in some way. Brightened, Clone stamped in small ways, etc. to make it look more dramatic. Was there a point to the photo? Did someone just tak it, at random, or was it in an ad for something, or to illustrate an article or something? That might be a clue, too. I think the only way to really know is to ask someone involved with it.

Well, it could have entered the water and be stopped and the picture taken at that point. With the water a little choppy around it. Would it be good for the bike to ride it into the water like that? Though I suppose it could be dried out after. If it was actually going (in the water) wouldn’t there be some ripples or distrubance in the water around it?

I found the site it comes from, other pictures there of bikes in the water, mud, etc.
Says: "This is probably the worst idea but the photo is great No snorkel and probably a lot of water truth the pipe love to hear the story of this one "

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?p=15216336#pos t15216336

The picture seems to be posted in 2003 by someone in Spain. Seems like a lot of trouble (if it’s doctored) just to post it on a site that has other pictures of bikes in water, mud, etc.

Not like if it was for a commercial or ad for something, where it might be put together just for effect (for some reason)

The surf is an almost straight line, in reality it should align better with the shape of the pannier, the vehicle frame, the driver’s knee.

If the bike is moving forward, your expectation that the surf would not appear roughly as a straight line perp to the ‘film’ plane is unreliable

So deeply immersed in Water, a bike can move only very slowly. The surf appears not to be caused by the bike’s movement, but by the current coming from the left. Therefore, the surf should align closely with the pannier, the driver’s knee and especially with the gap between these two. Instead, it stands there like a wall.
I believe the ‘surf’ is a wave produced by the bike (probably mainly from tehe right pannier) as it entered the deeper water a couple of seconds earlier. The bike is now probabbly stationary (or nearly so) and the wave has moved forwards away from the bike. The foreshortening effect of the telephoto shot (presumably taken from the other side of the river) is what makes the wave look odd in relationship to the bike. I can see no problems with depth od field or anything else.

I think that any suggestion that the photo is significantly doctored raised more questions than it solves. Why would anybody _want_ to fake this view?

The bike in question can, actually go through water like that with a snorkel on the air box. It’s one kill off-road bike.

Nice story, though maybe not quite on topic.

So, is this picture doctored? What do you think?
first I also ride a motor cycle, and I know for a fact
that the exhaust system must be above water line
and i do not see any extensions, so if entering the water it would not travel too far even if the electrical system is shielded … so my opinion is "fake"
thanks for reply

Ulysses, I rode for thirty years, many different kinds of street bikes of manufacturing dates from 1956 to 1995, Harley, BMW, Ducati and as long as the ignition was sealed, and the carbs were above water, the bike would go through the water with the pipes underwater – but #1, I did not go as deep as the bike in question and #2, none had sealed ignitions, although the BMW’s was higher. They all eventually came out rather badly from the crossing.

If you don’t know how the bike got in, at what speed or really much about the circumstances, you cannot confidently conclude about what is due to the bike’s movement, or the effects from previous moments at the moment the picture was taken.

I am experienced enough with motorcycling to confidently say that, so deep in the water, this bike cannot move fast enough to cause a bow wash of the magnitude seen here. Hence, this can’t be a bow wave. It would have to be be surf caused by the current – if it was real.

Not questioning your known experience (we have slightly and pleasantly swapped MC experience before I think, years back). But your above is a non-sequitur. The bike might have not been in the water long, its sudden entry and being brought to a halt by the resistance of the water might have caused what we are seeing. I am not saying you are wrong to think it doctored, I am saying it is a bit hard to tell on the basis of the things you are pointing to.
