In ancient Israel, it came to pass that a trader by the name of Abraham Com did take unto himself a young wife by the name of Dot.
And Dot Com was a comely woman, broad of shoulder and long of leg. Indeed, she was often called Amazon Dot Com.
And she said unto Abraham, her husband, "Why dost thou travel so far from town to town with thy goods when thou canst trade without ever leaving thy tent?" And Abraham did look at her – as though she were several saddle bags short of a camel load – but simply said,
"How, dear?"

And Dot replied, "I will place drums in all the towns and drums in between to send messages saying what you have for sale, and they will reply telling you who hath the best price. The sale can be made on the drums and delivery made by Uriah’s Pony Stable (UPS)."

Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her way with the drums. The drums rang out and were an immediate success. Abraham sold all the goods he had at the top price, without ever having to move from his tent.

To prevent neighboring countries from overhearing what the drums were saying, Dot devised a system that only she and the drummers knew. It was called Must Send Drum Over Sound (MSDOS), and she also developed a language to transmit ideas and pictures: Hebrew To The People (HTTP).

But this success did arouse envy. A man named Maccabia did secrete himself inside Abraham’s drum and began to siphon off some of Abraham’s business. But he was soon discovered, arrested and prosecuted for insider trading.

And the young men did take to Dot Com’s trading as doth the greedy horsefly take to camel dung. They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich Dominican Sybarites, or NERDS.

And lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the new riches and the deafening sound of drums that no one noticed that the real riches were going to that enterprising drum dealer, Brother William of Gates, who bought off every drum maker in the land. And he did insist on drums to be made that would work only with Brother Gates’ drum heads and drumsticks.

Lo, Dot did say, "Oh, Abraham, what we have started is being taken over by others!" And as Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel, or eBay as it came to be known, he said, "We need a name that reflects what we are." And Dot replied, "Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner Operators." "YAHOO!," said Abraham. And because it was Dot’s idea, they named it YAHOO Dot Com.

Abraham’s cousin, Joshua, being the young Gregarious Energetic Educated Kid (GEEK) that he was, soon started using Dot’s drums to locate things around the countryside. It soon became known as God’s Own Official Guide to Locating Everything (GOOGLE).
And that is how it all began! And where is it going>

Not really. A troll is a troll:

http://www.ask.com/wiki/Troll_%28Internet%29

In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

Your original post has nothing to do with PS. But you know that. Hence, Troll.

Carrie should learn to proof her posts before she hits send: "lets as God." k? Nothing worse than a Troll that can’t even type what they intended to say.

You and Carrie should get a room.

I think JD is the same person (writes the same) who has posted this stuff before, usning a different name. I just block it. The story was about the internet and we are using a discussion group ON the internet, so it is more on topic than calling people trolls and saying get a room, which has nothing to do with Photoshop at all. Whatever they need to do to get attention.

You are trying to explain to someone who doesn’t care. You think someone who writes like that, lecturing others on being "off topic" (while being off topic him/herself while doing it) cares why you did it?
The idea is to get attention, in anyway he/she can. Which is what trolls do…

While Ulysses post was off topic, it wasn’t a troll. You are stating what a troll is, but using that definition, nothing has been posted that fits that definition. He wasn’t posting an off topic message "….with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion." His post didn’t interrupt anything and he wasn’t trying to evoke an emotional response from anyone.
I have been in the newsgroups for a long time, and some of them have been moderated and were very restrictive on what could be posted, yet even in those groups, it was okay to post an occasional off topic post. It was those occasional off topic posts that kept things friendly, plus they usually were informative posts that, while being off topic, aided some of the members of the group.
The thing was, in those moderated groups, the moderator would politely mention that the posts had gotten off topic, so the conversation would stop. No one was ever called a troll because of it.

It was quite good. Sad at the end when you find out that it was not written by the OP!

As for the definition of troll, to try to be fair to the OP, perhaps the primary intent was simply to share something rather than to provoke or disrupt?

What it comes down to, if one thinks someone is like this (troll) just ignore them. I never used to block people, thinking it gets confusing, gaps in the threads and hard following what’s being said to who,and thinking maybe sometime they might change and say something interesting we could have a discussion about… but I have been on here. Too many years of the same thing, maybe the names change but the "feeling" they want to invoke in others is the same. Everyone is intitled to their opinions and on an unmoderated group they can say whatever they want, but without judging them as bad or wrong (or callilng them names back) I can make the choice to not communicate with them.

I didn’t see it as entertaining. So it didn’t piss EVERYONE off. And if it did, so what? Some people come to groups just looking for something to use to vent their own unhappy, angry and miserable feelings on. We can’t please everyone, no matter what. Because some people just don’t want to agree no matter what, and that’s their problem.
