Good afternoon all. I’m new to this forum as well as Photo Shop. Have been using Paint Shop Pro for a while.

As I get into PS7, I’m finding that there is a learning curve. The first problem I’m having is transforming a GIF image to a transparent GIF. In PSP, it’s rather easy, but wnat to learn how to do this in PS7.

Would someone please provide step by step instructions for this when you already have a GIF file (balck & white where the background of the image is white). I have one of those learn it books, but it doesn’t really give instructions at the "2nd grade" level if you know what I mean.

Thanks

Jay

Do a Save for Web, select GIF, and check the transparency box, and click on the color in the colors selection and on that little checkerboard box at the bottom left of the Save for Web screen.

The step violation left out was that you need to have transparency in the image for this to work. So, you need to rename the background layer (a switch to RGB image mode may be necessary). Then select and delete the white you want to get rid of, replacing it with the transparency checkerboard. This is what will become transparent.

And in the Save for Web, choose a Matte color close to the background color you want to use.

Don,

you need to have transparency in the image for this to work. <<

Not strictly true. You can drag any colour from the palette in S4W to the transparency icon to make it transparent, even when there is NO transparency in the original image, and only a Background layer.

Don,

Jay is using PS 7.0 and you can choose a transparent color while in the SFW dialog even if you are starting with a flat non transparent file. Granted it is the quick and dirty way, but it does work well for people that want a simple way to add transparency.

The "little checkerboard box" Carl is talking about is located at the bottom of the color table on the left and maps the selected color(s) to transparent.
